Crime Victims Would Get Records For Free Under Weinberg Bill

Crime victims would not have to pay for government files related to crimes committed against them and their records requests would be confidential in a bill sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg.

Weinberg’s legislation was recently approved 5-0 by the state senate’s Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee and will head to the full senate for consideration.

Under the proposal, fees for police reports, domestic violence reports and restraining orders would be waived for victims and alleged victims. The measure would also amend the Open Public Records Act to keep those requests private.

“Crime victims shouldn’t have to pay for crime reports and other documents containing information about the crimes they suffered,” Weinberg said in a statement. “They already ‘paid the price’ of being victimized.”

Weinberg said the proposed bill would especially benefit victims of domestic violence.
