Internet Safety Forum Set for Thursday

Officials to discuss sexting, bullying, hacking, ID theft and other online topics at free event at Richard Rodda Community Center.

In light of the recent security breaches at retailers and other Internet businesses as well as the ongoing concerns with cell phone safety for all age groups, Elie Y. Katz and Yitz Stern will hold a special program for residents entitled “Staying Safe in a High Tech World."

This event is scheduled for Thursday at 7:15 p.m. at the Richard Rodda Community Center.

The speakers scheduled include Police Chief Robert Wilson of the Teaneck Police Department, Assistant Prosecutor Brian Sinclair of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Investigators Aziza Salikhov & Brian Morgenstern from the Cyber Fraud Unit of the New Jersey State Attorney General’s Division of Consumer Affairs.

Topics will include sexting, bullying, inappropriate conversations, what your children know that you should know, online banking, online purchasing, recent hacking issues in the news, safe web browsing, email dos and don'ts, usernames and passwords, phishing and malware, and ID theft. These public safety professionals will also be available to answer questions from the audience.

“Recent news stories regarding the widespread theft of personal and financial information from the databases of several national retailers serves as a strong reminder that we need to continually educate ourselves so that we do our best to protect ourselves from these threats,” Stern said.

"As more of our population gets out into the cyber world, the potential for personal and financial harm continues to grow. This is especially true for our children, as they become more tech-savvy on a daily basis,” Katz said. “With a little foresight, we can protect ourselves from many potential issues."

Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
