Pascrell, Rothman to Meet in Teaneck

Rivals in bitter inter-party fight to attend candidate forum May 23.

The two Democratic congressmen vying to represent the will meet in Teaneck in what will likely be their last joint appearance before the June primary, local reform group Bergen Grassroots said.

Rep. Steve Rothman and Rep. Bill Pascrell have been engaged after the 9th District was redrawn. Teaneck, once completely in the old 9th District, was split between the redrawn 9th and Republican-leaning 5th.

The two will face written questions submitted by audience members during a May 23 forum at the on Larch Avenue.

“Because the Congressmen have served for the same period and have similar voting records, voters have had a difficult time differentiating between the two on matters of public policy," Michael Sheinfield, a Bergen Grassroots Steering Committee member, said in a news release. "We hope the residents of the redrawn 9th will use this unique opportunity to get answers to their questions just days before they head to the polls.”

Bergen Grassroots will accept reservations only from those on its mailing list until Friday, May 11, the group said. If spaces are left, the candidate forum will be open to others.

“Because it is anticipated that many will want to see and hear the exchange of ideas and space is limited in our meeting hall,” Steering Committee member Jason Snyder said in the release. “We are taking steps to make sure our members are not shut out.”

Questions for the candidates can be submitted to msheinfield@gmail.com. For more information and to make reservations, call 201-692-9600 or email paul@bergengrassroots.org.

Doors open at 7 p.m.

I keep getting polled about this race and have received literature from both sides. Problem is, I've be put into a different district. Someone should tell the candidates that they are wasting resources by seeking my vote. Hint to Rothman: if you really wanted my support and vote, you would have stayed and fought the Tea Party Republican that currently represents my new district. I'll be voting for Adam Gussen.
