Closures in both directions resume Wednesday for the replacement of the Flat Rock Brook Bridge in Englewood.

by James Kleimann

With work to replace the Flat Rock Brook Bridge in Englewood continuing, New Jersey Department of Transportation officials announced temporary road closures on Route 4 starting Wednesday.

According to the transit agency, lanes on both east and westbound sides will be shut down from Wednesday through Friday as the contractor mills and paves the road. At least one lane will be open in each direction while work is performed.

  • The work begins at 9 p.m. Wednesday, according to the DOT. The eastbound right lane will be closed until 1 a.m. Thursday. Two eastbound lanes will be open until 11 p.m. when transit authorities will close the eastbound center lane. Only one lane will be open until 1 a.m.

  • On the westbound side, the right and acceleration lanes will be closed from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. Thursday. One lane will be open westbound during that time. From 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. the left and right lanes will be closed on the westbound side. The shoulder will be used as a travel lane during that time, officials said.

  • On Thursday night, a temporary construction barrier will be installed. As a result, the left lanes on both the eastbound and westbound sides will be closed until 5 a.m. Friday. One lane will remain open westbound and two lanes will remain open eastbound.

The $1.5 million project will see the deteriorated deck over Flat Rock Brook replaced with a new pre-cast concrete deck. Further lane closures are expected next week.

One direction of Route 4 will be completely closed to traffic and detoured for a weekend each in late July/ early August, the DOT said in a news release.
