Teaneck Gives Veterans OK To Wear Military Hats

The township reached an agreement after two public works employees, both veterans, were told not to wear military caps on Veterans Day.

Teaneck employees who served in the armed forces will be allowed to wear their military hats on Veterans Day under an agreement reached Tuesday, officials said.

A brief controversy developed after a Department of Public Works supervisor told two subordinates - both veterans - that DPW dress code prohibited them from wearing their military-issued hats on Veterans Day.

Township Manager William Broughton said although the town maintains a uniform policy, veterans will be given permission to wear the caps during work hours. A DPW union representative and town officials met Tuesday afternoon to resolve the issue.

“Going forward, on Veterans Day our veterans will be allowed to wear their military hats while they are working,” Broughton said at a council meeting Tuesday night. “We value our military veterans and we think its important that we honor their service.”

Richard Muller, a DPW union representative, told The Record department supervisors won’t hassle employees about breaking dress code on Veterans Day, Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.

Muller had initially planned to bring the concerns to the town council if an agreement wasn’t reached.

Army veteran George Rosa and Mark Marshall, who served in the Navy, first spoke up about the dress code on Monday after the town gathered for the annual Veterans Day ceremony.
