GWB Project Halted For Labor Day Weekend

Port Authority officials will suspend overnight construction work on the George Washington Bridge in an effort to ease traffic delays through Labor Day weekend, the agency announced Thursday.

With work in the upper-level deck rehabilitation project temporarily halted, all lanes of the GWB will be open from 5 a.m. Friday through Monday, the Port Authority said.

“Construction on the upper-level deck rehabilitation project will resume Tuesday, September 3, at 9 p.m., when three of four eastbound upper-level lanes on the George Washington Bridge will close during the overnight hours next week on Tuesday through Thursday between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. and on Friday starting at 10 p.m. through Saturday at 10 a.m.,” according to a Port Authority advisory.

Motorists were asked to used the GWB’s lower level, but trucks would still be required to use the upper-level. Cash toll booth lanes will be staffed on the approach to the lowel-level.

Projects at all other Port Authority crossings will also be suspended through the holiday weekend, the agency said.
