Port Authority Tolls To Increase Thanksgiving Weekend

Agency source says toll hike not timed for peak holiday travel season, according to report

Tolls on Port Authority bridges and tunnels are set to go up on Dec. 1, just in time for the busy holiday travel season, according to a New York Post report.

For peak travel times, EZ-Pass tolls at the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel and Lincoln Tunnel will increase by 75 cents to $11, the report said. Tolls during off-peak travel will go from $8.25 to $9.

Cash tolls for cars will stay at $13. Truckers with six axles will see their toll jump to $84 from $72 during peak times.

The AAA, which sued the Port Authority over its toll hike in 2011, said the increase would come on the day most Thanksgiving travelers head home.

“The trip home from Grandma’s might lead to indigestion for many drivers as the Port Authority’s toll hikes take effect just in time to spoil the end of the holiday weekend,” Robert Sinclair Jr., an AAA spokesman, told the Post.

A Port Authority source, however, said the toll increase was not timed to squeeze holiday travelers, according to the report. The hikes were set to kick in on the first Sunday of December.
