Team Seeks Input on Proposed Bergen Bus Route Upgrades

Nine routes under review for possible improvements

A study team is collecting public input on implementing a bus rapid transit system on nine possible routes linking key hubs and travel destinations across the area, according to the initiative’s website.

Members of the team, led by Bergen County and NJ Transit officials, met at the Bergen Community College campus in Hackensack Wednesday to share progress on the system, which could include routes with fewer stops, bus lanes and other features to improve service.

Officials have whittled down potential routes for the system from 21 to the nine, and will work to further narrow the routes to three or four, NJ.com reported. The team is collecting feedback on the routes via its website.

“With very limited opportunities to expand the capacity of our highways or rail network and the need to serve new destinations, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a customer focused, innovative, and effective way to create new mobility options,” the study’s website states.

Five routes begin in Paramus, shuttling passengers to stops including, Garden State Plaza, Bergen Community College and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. Another route travels from Paterson, via Route 4, to the George Washington Bridge bus terminal in upper Manhattan. Another route being considered links large corporate parks in Woodcliff Lake with the midtown Port Authority terminal.

After selecting the routes, transit officials would need to decide which features of the bus rapid transit system to implement, according to the report.
