Free Math, Writing Program to Begin in Teaneck

A free math and reading enrichment program for second through 12th graders will launch its eleventh annual session Saturday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Teaneck.

The Math Adventures & Word Play program is open to Teaneck residents and others throughout the New York City metropolitan area. The program offers a host of math, reading and writing instruction, said Ardie Walser, the program’s co-founder and Teaneck Board of Education President.

The math portion will provide instruction for elementary, middle and high schoolers in areas from basic arithmetic to calculus. The “word play” program, will offer lessons on areas including reading comprehension, essays and creative writing.

Walser is seeking volunteers from various background to assist. New volunteers are asked to arrive at 10 a.m. for registration and orientation.

“We enroll both scholars and volunteers continuously throughout the year. Volunteers may give as much or as little of their time as they like,” Wasler said in an email.

The program will also offer sessions for parents and guardians. In past sessions, the parent program included presentations from local school officials who discussed state standardized tests and special education.

The program will begin Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at 118 Chadwick Road in Teaneck and last through March 29. Registration is ongoing from Oct. 5.
