Math Adventures and Word Play (MAWP) is a 90-minute tutoring program held on Saturdays and offering free access to the entire community. MAWP provides instruction in math, reading and writing for students in grades two through 12 with opportunity for advanced students to participate in The Math Circle, designed for students interested in higher-level math manipulations such as differential equations, discrete mathematics, matrices and more. The MAWP now features an open-forum called the Parent Center, discussing education topics like the academic achievement gap, the public school system and the importance of parental involvement.

Ardie Walser, Brenda Allen and I began Math Adventures because we identified the "gap" that existed, particularly in Math, for many children. This resulted in us developing a free tutorial program nine years ago that was in Hawthorne School and Longfellow schools on school nights for a few years. The program finally settled in St. Mark's Episcopal Church about six years ago, where we ran the program on Saturday mornings, and we've been there ever since. We added Word Play with the inclusion of Jeanette Adams, a professional writer and teacher of English at CCNY about 5 years ago. Now, Math Adventures & Word Play services both skills for students from second to twelfth grades in groups and, at times, in one-on-one situations.
We are ALWAYS looking for tutors who can come in to help us with the students. High School students who have good math or English skills are welcome to come in as tutors and get their Community Service Hours with us.
After dropping their children off at the program, parents are welcome to stay and assist children other than their own, with their work. Our enrollment is open, so any student can register at any time their need to get academic assistance is recognized.
Our doors open at 10:30 am. Parents should bring their children in to the program and sign them in at the registration desk, every week; not drop them off at the curb, for their children's safety. We also ask that you come in to the program to sign them out promptly at 12 Noon.
