The governor later cut a ceremonial ribbon—a Guinness World Record at over five miles long—to officially declare the shore open.  "It's an incredible day for New Jersey," Christie said in remarks. "I'm so thrilled that this morning we're here with the whole country welcoming the Jersey Shore back." After being battered by Superstorm Sandy, many businesses on the boardwalk are open and welcoming customers, though others continue to make repairs. Despite some grey skies, …

As Rebuilding Continues, Shore is Open for Business

Tourism commissioner says rental market is healthy.

Though immense devastation from Superstorm Sandy remains visible up and down the New Jersey coastline, beaches, boardwalks and even rental homes are ready for the annual influx of summer tourists that will begin this weekend, officials said Thursday at the annual "State of the Shore" event in Belmar. The State of the Shore report is presented by state officials and the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium every year before Memorial Day weekend kicks off, but this year it evolved to mark the unofficial reopening of the Shore area following Sandy. With emergency repairs to state and local infrastructure damaged by the storm now complete, work has started on the state's long term recovery, said Bob Martin, commissioner of the state Department of …

Can New Jersey Insure Against the Next Sandy?

Disaster-specific damage coverage among concepts aired at Rutgers conference on impact of climate change

The impact of climate change goes far beyond the obvious issues of public safety and disaster planning, participants stressed during a conference held yesterday at Rutgers University. New Jersey should be considering future costs, long-term health risks, and even social justice issues when considering how to deal with a warming climate, they said. The good news is that there are some creative ideas on how to deal with the varied effects of climate change, regardless of its cause. For instance, New Jersey could protect itself against the vast cost of future disasters like Superstorm Sandy by taking out insurance that would pay in the event of hurricanes or other natural calamities. State or county governments could buy policies that would …

Officials Tag Baby Falcons Living on GWB

Young birds expected to take flight within weeks

Four peregrine falcon chicks recently hatched on the George Washington Bridge were tagged with identifying bands Tuesday, according to reports.  The birds hatched about three weeks ago six feet below the bridge's lower level, CBS-2 reported. Peregrine falcons nest in high places most like cliffs, including buildings and bridges around New York City.  "I come in when they're three months old and put identification tags on the young on both legs. These identification tags will stay on for their lifetime, and it gives us a wealth of biological information," NYC Department of Environmental Protection biologist Chris Nadareski told NY1.  Port Authority bridge crews regularly check a special nesting box and assisted DEP experts tag the birds. …
