Op-Ed: New School Performance Reports Are a Faulty Measure

Rutgers University professors responds to state's School Performance Reports

Letter: Votee Park Improvements Worth the Cost

Former Teaneck coach reflects on the history and future of town’s main park.

The following is a letter to the editor. To submit a letter, e-mail teaneck@patch.com There is a lot of history to Votee Park, which until the mid-1960s was known as Central Park. It had been created from a marsh area during the 1930s as a public works project as part of the relief and recovery elements of the New Deal. For most of its existence it has varied from an a multi-purpose recreational resource and a swamp. I grew across the street from Central Park, moving to a house on Queen Anne Road in 1947. It was our "front yard" for me and five siblings, a place where some played Jr. Ivy League soccer and/or football and a park where I worked as a playground leader for four summers in the early 1960s. Finally, I coached JV soccer and …

Generally speaking, I can agree only as far as improving the fields and little else. Permanent bleachers and such do not improve the fields. The only non field improvemnent I would endorse would be bathrooms, which are not included in the plan. David, were there operating bathrooms in your time at Votee or did you use portajohns too?   more ›

Letter: Teaneck Shows Leadership in Holocaust Education

Collection of Holocaust-related books dedicated at Teaneck High School

This past Thursday evening, I had the opportunity along with several dozen others to attend the formal dedication of the Holocaust Collection at Teaneck High School’s Media Center. This outstanding community resource includes Holocaust-related books from two private libraries of Holocaust survivors and their families – The Friedman-Sieradski Family and the Ores Family. With the support of the Teaneck School District, these collections have been catalogued and placed in a beautiful, sunlit space within the Center by the High School’s Principal, Mr. Dennis Heck. They include histories, biographies, memoirs, memorial collections, art books and more. In the same area is a sculpture by noted Teaneck and New Jersey artist Milton Ohring, who …

The history of Teaneck High School dealing with Holocaust education is not new. In the 1972-1973 school year there started a Jewish Studies Course. A few years later Edwin Reynolds, and John Schupack, help write the Holocaust curriculum used in the State of New Jersey.   more ›

Teaneck Peace Vigil Collecting Supplies for Military Families

Group calls for end to veterans affairs agency backlog

The following is a letter to the editor:  Remember during the early years of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars there were yellow ribbons saying, “Support the Troops! Support the Troops?” Then, why is the Teaneck Peace Vigil having a food drive to help veterans and military families? Tragically, many of our veterans are homeless. Many of our veterans cannot find jobs. Even many members of our National Guard do not have jobs waiting for them when they come home. More than 1 million veterans are waiting over 1 year to have their disability benefits approved by the VA (Veterans Administration). This is a disgrace. We ask the public to call members of Congress. Tell them to END THE VA BACKLOG. Call 877-429-0678. Please bring canned goods and baby …

Teaneck Peace Vigil Collecting Food, Supplies for Military Families

Group calls for end to veterans affairs agency backlog

The following is a letter to the editor: During the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan, yellow ribbons saying, “Support the troops” were everywhere. Unfortunately, nearly one million veterans are now waiting over one year to get approved for disability checks! Other veterans are unable to find housing or jobs. Many military families are hurting. That our country would allow this to happen to our troops and veterans is a disgrace. The Teaneck Peace Vigil is calling on you to call or write the President (202-456-1111) or call your member of Congress (877- 429-0678). Tell them: Support our veterans! End the VA backlog! The Teaneck Peace Vigil is conducting a food and supply drive for military families. We are collecting the following: hot and cold …

Is Teaneck Commuter-Friendly?

What can be done to improve conditions for local commuters?

Teaneck is served by several main bus routes into New York City, in addition to having three major highways.  While the township is home to numerous bus stops, parking can sometimes present issues, with commuters parking for hours on local streets.  Unlike nearby Hackensack, the town has no passenger rail stops.  Do you think Teaneck is a commuter-friendly town? What changes can be made to improve conditions on your daily commute? Share your views in the comments section or e-mail a letter to teaneck@patch.com

Commuters from all over come to Ayers Ct and surrounding blocks and park their cars and then head up to Teaneck Rd to catch the bus into NYC. Since people work all sorts of hours, their cars remain on these residential side streets and take away from the residents who live on these streets. The customers at the stores, restaurants and bars do the same thing in the evening. I had to purchase a …   more ›

Letter: Gun Control Proposals Would Not Stop Shootings

President of local gun club criticizes legislators and council over support for new gun regulations

I write as president of the Golani Rifle & Pistol Club, a Teaneck-based gun club who's primary goal is to promote the responsible ownership and use of firearms in the Jewish community. It is regrettable that the state assembly and many town councils in our area rushed to approve over a dozen new gun bans and restrictions without considering the opinions of gun owners who wish only to protect their families and themselves.  The proposals would, among other things, make many shotguns, rifles, handguns, and magazines illegal, and make actual felons out of those who already own such firearms or use magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.  The state has previously prosecuted citizens for similar violations.  For instance, Joseph Pelleteri was …

Why is it that every time a tragedy dictates that something must be done, the liberals always pick the wrong "something". Facts become irrelevant in every argument with a convinced [confused] liberal. On "60 Minutes" I was hoping and praying that Scott Pelli would ask the Newtown residents: "What might have been the outcome, how many children's lives could have been saved, if only one of the …   more ›

Letter: Walgreens Could Jumpstart Cedar Lane Revitalization

Proposed Walgreens store on Cedar Lane will offer tax revenue boost, letter says.

The following is a letter to the editor submitted by Elie Y. Katz, a Teaneck councilman:  Let me start by saying that I am not writing this in any official capacity, but rather to express my views as a resident and tax payer concerned about the future of Cedar Lane and the tax base of Teaneck. If I were making the decision of what store to place on Cedar Lane and its location, I probably would not have chosen another pharmacy and certainly not next door to CVS and J&J. In my opinion, another pharmacy in Teaneck is needed as much as another bank, ATM or nail salon. In the last year and a half, I have heard from residents, read articles, and driven past many of the stores on Cedar Lane that are for rent, lay vacant and give the impression …

Group Details Opposition to Building Holocaust Museum in Teaneck Park

Location of proposed Holocaust memorial and education center at issue

The following is an open letter from the Friends of the Hackensack River Greenway sent to the Township Council and the Township Manager. Click to read more about the proposed Holocaust education center and memorial.     Dear Mayor Hameeduddin, The Friends of the Hackensack River Greenway in Teaneck is an established 501C3 membership organization which actively supports the protection, maintenance and usage of the Hackensack River Greenway in Teaneck. It has come to our attention that the development of a Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Education Center building are proposed for the Carriage House section of Andreas Park in Teaneck, through which the Greenway runs. Our organization is in no way opposed to such a memorial. The Holocaust was…

Friends of the Hackensack River Greenway make excellent points. I would just like to say I agree with them and have enjoyed walking the trails they constructed. The peace of the park would be disrupted by groups of visitors arriving in cars or buses to a Holocaust Memorial. Andreas is one of the smallest parks in Teaneck. The Holocaust Memorial should be located elsewhere in Teaneck.   more ›
