Teaneck Marks Memorial Day With Festival, Remembrance [PHOTOS]

Teaneck commemorated Memorial Day with a patriotic observance ceremony on the Municipal Green, drawing a crowd of officials, residents, veterans and service members. The patriotic ceremony drew hundreds of people to hear speeches by Jason Castle, a former Marine and Iraq war veteran, and retired New Jersey National Guard commander Jorge J. Martinez. Castle, a Teaneck resident, was initially uninvited from speaking over his criticism of township officials, but re-invited through a 5-0 council vote after scores of residents and veterans rallied to support him. In his speech, Castle spoke of his Marine Corps service and reflected on his fellow service members. The town's annual Cedar Lane festival also offered a range of fun for scores of …

The only thing Loretta stands by is "Confiscate, confiscate, confiscate." Wait until she tells all her blind gun grabbing followers.."Shut-up..shut-up..shut-up", you have no right to speak. Then her followers will cry but it's my First Amendment right, and she'll sponsor a law that makes them apply for a ID card so they can speak.   more ›

PSE&G ‘Misled’ Teaneck in Sandy Response, Official Says

Residents and council members say more communication is needed in future storms.

Public Service Electric and Gas funneled incorrect information to Teaneck officials in the wake of Superstorm Sandy and the township should work to expand its own communications for future disasters, town council members and residents said Tuesday. Despite numerous conference calls and a meeting with PSE&G’s chief executive, Teaneck still struggled to glean any useful information on the company’s power restoration efforts, officials said. “We were misinformed and misled, whether it was due to incompetence or intentional misinformation, I am not entirely sure, but the result is the same,” said Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen. In one briefing with PSE&G, Gussen said he was told crews started work at a Teaneck power station following the storm. In …

Carol Kaplan I, too, question the advice to use your i-phone to get information from Facebook or Twitter, etc. during emergencies when the power is out. Not everyone has the advantage of an i-phone but many, many residents still have the good old-fashioned telephone that is wired to a telephone pole, not connected to cable systems,....it is still more reliable than anything else. Therefore, I …   more ›

Garrett Defeats Teaneck Deputy Mayor in 5th District

Republican congressman wins sixth term

Republican Rep. Scott Garrett captured the redrawn 5th district Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, the Associated Press reports.   Restricting expanded Garrett's longtime Republican-leaning district to include Democratic strongholds of Hackensack and most of Teaneck. Despite being vastly out-fundraised, Gussen maintained the district was winnable with support from Bergen votes.  The two candidates presented starkly different platforms, but Garrett avoided confronting Gussen directly in the campaign. Instead, the Republican congressman's attacks focused on President Obama.  Gussen slammed Garrett for his conservative positions on women's health issues and opposition of the Affordable Care Act.  He …

Democratic Challenger Harbors High Hopes in 5th District

But incumbent GOP congressman says issues transcend redrawn boundaries

By Mary Barr Mann, NJSpotlight.com New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District has been in Republican hands for nearly 70 years, butAdam Gussen -- the Democratic challenger to incumbent Rep. Scott Garrett -- says the district has become “eminently competitive” for his party. Indeed, a recent Bergen County Republican Organization poll shows a tight race — with Garrett ahead of Gussen by only 2 percentage points -- despite the fact that Gussen has relatively little name recognition and funding. Yet the race is not on the national radar; neither party is targeting the race. Garrett has held the seat for the past 10 years, fending off successive Democratic challengers and earning a reputation as the most conservative congressman from New Jersey …

Garrett, Gussen Debate in Mahwah [POLL]

Republican centers attacks on President Obama.

Republican 5th District Rep. Scott Garrett largely ignored Democratic challenger Adam Gussen at a debate Sunday in Mahwah, instead focusing his attacks on President Barack Obama, northjersey.com reported. “I’m not President Obama, and there’s no empty chair for Clint Eastwood to talk to either,” Gussen said, according to the report. Gussen, Teaneck’s deputy mayor, accused of Garrett of backing “big business and special interests” over area families, according to a Jewish Standard report. He pointed to his experience on the Teaneck council and his work in business development with small to mid-sized businesses. On foreign policy, Garrett said Obama was “treating our friends as enemies” and pointed to recent violent in the region, the report…

Garrett No Friend to Israel, Opponent Gussen Says

Republican congressman's support for Israel amounts to "empty words," Teaneck opponent says.

The following is a letter to the editor from Adam Gussen:  Over his years in Congress, Scott Garrett has voted to support the State of Israel on several occasions.  He's voted to recognize the Israel on her anniversary.  He's recognized her right to defend herself.  He's voted to urge Mahmoud Abbas to remove the 10 articles in the Fatah Constitution that call for Israel's destruction and terrorism against Israel.  In short, Scott Garrett has stood with Israel on many occasions.  However, when Israel's security was actually being threatened, Scott Garrett put partisan politics ahead of the safety of every Israeli man woman and child.   In October of last year, Scott Garrett voted against an amendment designed to stop US land from being …

Financial Sector Among Top Garrett Donors, Study Says

Republican incumbent given about $900,000 from finance, real estate and insurance interests, according to a study.

Donations from financial, insurance and real estate interests made up nearly 56 percent of the more than $1.6 million raised by Republican Rep. Scott Garrett in the current race, a report from the Sunlight Foundation found. Only two other members of congress have received more from financial, real estate and insurance groups in the current election cycle, according to the study. Garrett received a total of $918,038 from the interests. The Sunlight Foundation said the campaign cash buys access. Garrett chairs a subcommittee overseeing financial market regulation, including the Securities and Exchange Commission. “It buys face time at fundraisers and a chance to make sure that members of Congress hear about the concerns of the financial …

Gussen Sees Congressional Win in Bergen Support [POLL]

Teaneck candidate concedes he is unlikely to beat Republican Rep. Scott Garrett in rural county.

Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen told Sussex County Democrats he is unlikely to beat Wantage Republican Rep. Scott Garrett in the rural county, but could win the 5th district congressional race with support from Bergen votes, the New Jersey Herald reported. Redistricting shifted most of Teaneck and other Democratic strongholds, including Hackensack, to Garrett’s Republican-leaning 5th district. The possibly of Garrett becoming House Budget Committee chair under a Mitt Romney presidency could also fuel Democratic votes, Gussen said in the report. Gussen faces Garrett’s nearly $2 million campaign war chest, including backing from major national donors, according to reports.   Related Stories:    Follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter or …

Leak Case Against Teaneck Deputy Mayor Can Proceed

Judge rules complaint against Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, a Democratic candidate for Congress, can move forward.

A judge has found probable cause to move ahead with a complaint by a longtime political foe of Teaneck’s deputy mayor, in which she accuses the now-Congressional candidate of leaking confidential information about her to the media. Former Councilwoman Barbara Toffler alleges that Adam Gussen, who is running against Republican Rep. Scott Garret in the 5th District, leaked a personnel complaint filed against her by Township Manager William Broughton, and that he shared with a newspaper reporter information about a closed session council meeting in Jan. 2011. "I have evidence which provides probable cause to believe that this confidential information, and in all likelihood the letter itself, was provided ... by Deputy Mayor and Councilman …

Art: The charge was against Adam Gussen because there is evidence that Gussen spoke to Joe Ax just prior to Ax's article being printed in the Record -- which appeared prior to the "confidential" "closed meeting" the article reported on. Dog Park Considered in Teaneck

Phelps Park eyed for possible off-leash dog run.

A long-shuttered area of Phelps Park could become a dog run after council members asked the township manager to explore the cost and scope of converting the space. An area of the Phelps Park pool, which has been closed for several years, could serve as a dog park, Councilman Elie Y. Katz proposed at Tuesday’s council meeting. The land already has a water supply, fencing and is removed from nearby homes. “Phelps Park is the first park that we did a trial on for having dogs with leashes in the park and it’s been a very successful trial and we’ve had zero complaints,” Katz said. Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen said petitions asking for a dog run in Teaneck have amassed hundreds of signatures. “The idea to utilize the existing fencing at Phelps is a …
