The following is a letter to the editor: Recently, a Muslim organization, the American Muslim Union (AMU), has been advocating for Teaneck to officially recognize the two Muslim holidays of Eid as school holidays. But as the Imam of Nida-ul-Islam mosque and the father of three children in the Teaneck public school system, I question this initiative. The Township of Teaneck, in line with its tradition of tolerance and accommodation, already provides Muslim students with a halal food option, ability to make the daily prayers, join the Friday congregation at the mosque and allows for Muslim students to take off on their religious holidays – and for this we are thankful. The AMU’s proposal in theory, for us, Teaneck Muslims, sounds great. …

Should the district add two days off for religious observances?
A local Muslim community leader has asked Teaneck’s Board of Education to add two school days off for Muslim religious observances. Waheed Khalid, of the American Muslim Union, said he wants the district to close on two holidays called Eids, according to an article in the Teaneck Suburbanite. "There are a substantial number of Muslim families in Teaneck with children who attend the public schools," Khalid said in the report. Khalid estimated there are about 300 to 500 Muslim families living in Teaneck. The township is home to two mosques, and North Jersey's Muslim community has grown significantly in recent years. The following information was submitted by the Teaneck Democratic Municipal Committee: The Teaneck Democratic Municipal Committee will be holding a forum addressing bias for all Teaneck residents. The event will include a panel discussion with local leaders who are working every day to preserve a peaceful and productive diversity in our community, followed by Q&A, and an opportunity for all of us to meet a new neighbor and talk with fellow residents of Teaneck. The panel (still in formation) will include representatives from the Teaneck Community Relations Advisory Board, the Bergen County Branch of the NAACP, Teaneck Community Policing, American Muslim Union, and a Teaneck schools educator and anti-bullying specialist.
