Judge rules complaint against Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, a Democratic candidate for Congress, can move forward.
A judge has found probable cause to move ahead with a complaint by a longtime political foe of Teaneck’s deputy mayor, in which she accuses the now-Congressional candidate of leaking confidential information about her to the media. Former Councilwoman Barbara Toffler alleges that Adam Gussen, who is running against Republican Rep. Scott Garret in the 5th District, leaked a personnel complaint filed against her by Township Manager William Broughton, and that he shared with a newspaper reporter information about a closed session council meeting in Jan. 2011. "I have evidence which provides probable cause to believe that this confidential information, and in all likelihood the letter itself, was provided ... by Deputy Mayor and Councilman …

Toffler, Honis honored by state lawmakers.
Two ongoing Teaneck council members were honored for their years of service this week, days before new members will be sworn in at a reorganization meeting. Barbara Toffler and Monica Honis, who lost their bids for re-election, were honored with a proclamation from District 37 lawmakers at Tuesday’s council meeting. Toffler lost her bid for a second term, while Honis was denied a third term. Councilman Elie Y. Katz, who often sparred with Toffler, noted how the two found common ground on some projects. Katz credited Honis with tackling a range of community initiatives, including a township clean-up event. “You're young, you're dedicated and you have a very good heart," Katz told Honis. Mayor Mohammed Hameeduddin thanked both members for …

A jealous husband was behind the killing of a Teaneck man who was found shot to death last year in his charred Elm Avenue home, Bergen County Prosecutors charged. A sixth-grade teacher at Yeshivat Noam in Paramus and former Teaneck youth director was in custody after FBI agents found hundreds of videos and images depicting child pornography on his home computer, according to authorities and court documents. Investigators have identified the body of a man pulled from the Hackensack River Sunday and found no signs of foul play in the death, police said. About a hundred Teaneck residents have claimed fraudulent charges on their credit cards since Wednesday, leading township police to urge residents to officially report the alleged activity…

Deputy Mayor says councilwoman’s allegations follow series of false claims.
Councilwoman Barbara Toffler this week called for a council colleague to resign and said she would seek to have criminal charges brought against the longtime political adversary amid a swirl of allegations following Teaneck’s municipal election. In a statement read at Tuesday’s council meeting, Toffler said a voicemail she received from a Teaneck Suburbanite reporter “contemporaneously” identified the person responsible for leaking confidential information about a personnel compliant filed against her last year, who she later said was Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen. “The voicemail comes in at 5:42 on January 31, 2011 and describes a discussion Deputy Mayor Gussen is having with the Record reporter,” Toffler said in the statement. The caller, …

Collaboration with the school board also at issue.
With days left before the municipal election, the six council hopefuls detailed some of their ideas to boost Teaneck’s business climate and handle development at a candidate forum this week. Incumbents Monica Honis, Mohammed Hameeduddin and Barbara Toffler, along with council election newcomers Alexander Rashin, Mark Schwartz and Henry Pruitt, have recently faced questions on how they would spur economic development in a town where residents have voiced concerns about the tax burden and shuttered storefronts. At the Teaneck Community Charter School’s forum Tuesday, Schwartz pointed to the need for increased foot traffic. Schwartz, a planning board member and real estate consultant, said the Cedar Lane and Queen Anne Road business areas …

Senior living on American Legion Drive, vacant storefronts also discussed.
Teaneck's six township council candidates took questions this week on issues ranging from commercial development, senior services and the much-debated four-day workweek for town employees. Incumbents Monica Honis, Mohammed Hameeduddin and Barbara Toffler, along with council election newcomers Alexander Rashin, Mark Schwartz and Henry Pruitt, met Monday night at Teaneck High School for the League of Women Voters candidates forum. The candidates did not directly engage each other, instead taking submitted questions. A question on support for the town hall's current four-day schedule brought some of the more varied views from the six candidates. Toffler, who has been vocal in her opposition to the building's four day schedule, said …

Four-day workweek for town employees could change in union negotiations.
Residents quizzed the six Township Council candidates on issues ranging from diversity to the town’s four-day workweek during the Northeast Teaneck Block Association’s candidates forum at the Richard Rodda Center Monday night. Incumbents Monica Honis, Mohammed Hameeduddin and Barbara Toffler, along with council election newcomers Alexander Rashin, Mark Schwartz and Henry Pruitt are vying for three seats on the town’s governing body. While there was little back and forth between the candidates, one of the more debated issues was the town’s current four-day work schedule for most township offices. One resident questioned if closing on Fridays had saved any money. “There is no cost saving to the four-day workweek. We are not furloughing …

Township officials say tree is no risk to property.
The months-long quest by an Alicia Avenue woman to remove a town tree she says is threatening her property continued Tuesday, as residents urged the Township Council to take action. Resident Ruth Brower has continually appeared at council meetings to share her concern that roots from a swamp red maple tree in front of her house are invading her yard and could threaten her foundation. “There is almost 12 feet of solid root mass covering my lawn,” Brower told council members in her latest plea for help Tuesday night. “My home, to me, is more important than this particular tree.” Because the tree is on public property, Brower cannot remove it. She said public works crews could remove the “destructive” tree and presented council members with a…

Art: The charge was against Adam Gussen because there is evidence that Gussen spoke to Joe Ax just prior to Ax's article being printed in the Record -- which appeared prior to the "confidential" "closed meeting" the article reported on. I really wish you would drop the term "snitch" in this matter. The word is either akin to "tattler" or worse, an informer who puts his life on the line in certain…   more ›
