Teaneck Mayor Mohammed Hameeduddin, Superintendent of Teaneck Public Schools Barbara Pinsak and Lennox Small, principal of Benjamin Franklin Middle School, were on hand April 29 to honor BFMS Teacher Monica Joffe and student Alex Lecky for winning Barnes and Noble's local "My Favorite Teacher" contest. Lecky submitted a winning essay in the contest.

A Benjamin Franklin Middle School teacher beat out 220 others to be win the Barnes and Noble "My Favorite Teacher" contest, the company announced Tuesday. Teacher Monica Joffe was selected from the scores of other local entries at the Hackensack bookstore. Student Alex Lecky nominated Joffe for the award and wrote the winning essay, according to Barnes and Noble. The two will be honored April 29 at 6 p.m. at the Shops at Riverside location. "Students were invited to nominate their teacher by writing essays, poems or thank-you letters that share how their teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire their teacher," said a news release from the company. An online contest could bring up to $50,000 in grand funding to Teaneck’s Benjamin Franklin Middle School. The school is seeking votes now through Dec. 19 to win funding through the Clorox Company’s Power A Bright Future grant program. Anyone 13 and up and cast votes online once a day at the Clorox website or by text message. “The program that receives the highest number of votes will be awarded the $50,000 grand-prize grant, and the next top vote-getters in the Play, Create and Explore categories respectively will each be awarded a $25,000 grant. The following item was submitted by Sheetal Ranjan, a Benjamin Franklin Middle School parent: Benjamin Franklin Middle School held its annual science fair exhibition on May 22. Students from 7th and 8th grade work on the projects for about two months wherein they have to come up with a scientific proposal, do the experiment, collect data and create a display. The projects are then displayed at the Science Fair event. This year, the 7th grade winners are Thaalank Ranjan (from Mr Arevalo's class) and Umar (from Mr Hickey's class) for their project titled "No Fracking Way". In this project, they simulated a vertical and horizontal drill and found that horizontal drills using the fracking procedure caused more damage than vertical drills…

TJ and BF middle school educators create award-winning screenplays and short films in their spare time
Michael Valentino and Michael Miceli have many things in common. Both have the same first name, both are eighth-grade science teachers in the Teaneck Public Schools, and both men have a passion for movies. Valentino, who teaches at Thomas Jefferson, and Miceli, who teaches at Benjamin Franklin, have helped students in the district learn about biology, Earth science, chemistry and physics. And while many students may be shocked to learn that their instructors have a life outside of the classroom, others in the school system already are aware that there are two budding filmmakers walking the halls. School, community remember Bettie Miller's love for students and life
Benjamin Franklin Middle School honored a beloved teacher Monday night with a ceremony featuring student and faculty tributes. Bettie Miller, who taught children with special needs, passed away suddenly on May 19, according to school officials. More than 100 people – a majority wearing red in honor of Miller’s sorority Delta Sigma Theta – attended the memorial celebration. Colleagues, students, sorority sisters and Miller’s family gathered for a tree-planting ceremony in the school’s garden and took in a night of song, dance and touching visual tributes. “We are truly privilged to know someone in the form of Bettie Miller – our teacher, our friend, our colleague,” said BFMS Principal Lennox Small. “She was beautiful inside and out.
