Judge and officer injured in falls; courthouse closed for remainder of the day, official says.
HACKENSACK - A 27-year-old New Milford man was arrested Monday after he broke a water pipe at the Bergen County Courthouse, causing significant damage and forcing the building to close for the remainder of the day, the sheriff’s office said. Benjamin Blohm was caught on camera kicking the third floor pipe until it broke, according to Bergen County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Richard Moriarty. Sheriff's officers reviewed security footage and arrested Blohm at the courthouse. Blohm was in the building for a drug court appearance, Moriarty said. A Superior Court judge and a sheriff’s officer slipped on the wet ground and were both treated for injuries, Moriarty said. The judge was taken to an area hospital, but his condition was not …

Court moved as part of effort to ease overcrowding at county justice complex.
The new location for Bergen County Central Municipal Court will open Tuesday in Hackensack, one step in a major renovation of the county’s justice complex. Officials will open the new location at 71 Hudson Street. The county has been renovating the building since last year. Central Municipal Court is unique to Bergen and generally handles summonses issued by county agencies. The busy court was located in the Bergen County Courthouse on Main Street. Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan has announced plans to rehabilitate the historic courthouse and surrounding justice complex. John L. March will go to Bergen County Courthouse Wednesday
Bergen County religious and community groups plan to march from a Hackensack church to the steps of the county courthouse Wednesday as a call for justice in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager in Florida. Trayvon Martin, 17, was shot dead Feb. 26 in Sanford, Florida, by 28-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who told police he was acting in self-defense. The teen was walking back from a convenience store, carrying candy and wearing a hoodie sweatshirt. Zimmerman has not been charged in the teen’s death. Marchers will gather at 5:30 p.m. at Mount Olive Baptist Church, at 260 Central Avenue, then head to the courthouse before a worship service, a statement from the church said. Speakers encourage crowd to continue path to peace and justice.
The Third Annual People’s Ceremony that was held Saturday afternoon in Hackensack honored the millions of Africans who suffered during the time of slavery. About 50 people gathered for the event on the courthouse lawn where the African Historic Monument is located. Elected officials at the ceremony included State Sen. Loretta Weinberg, County Executive Kathleen Donovan, Freeholder John Mitchell, Assemblyman Gordon Johnson, and Assemblywoman Valerie Huttle.
