Officials say 120 guns turned in at Teaneck and Englewood collection sites. Weapons ranged from World War II-era guns to assault rifles.
Bergen County’s second gun buyback netted almost twice the amount of firearms purchased about three years ago, including 120 weapons collected across locations in Teaneck and Englewood. Crowds were so heavy that by Sunday afternoon, at a Teaneck collection site, sheriff’s officers were scrambling to find more cash to keep the two-day buyback program running through its final two hours. "The last two days have been an overwhelming success," Sheriff's Office spokesman Richard Moriarty said. "We actually had to appeal to the prosecutor last night for more funds because we were running out of money very quickly." In total, the weekend buyback collected 1,307 firearms and 55,000 rounds of ammunition across six sites compared to the 708 firearms…

Former Bergen County prosecutor, executive, sheriff and police chief argue that merging the county police and sheriff's offices may actually cost taxpayers more
Three former Bergen County officials threw their support behind the Bergen County Police Department in an ongoing debate about whether or not the department should be merged with the Sheriff’s Department. Former Bergen County Executive William “Pat” Schuber, former County Prosecutor Jay Fahy, and Joel Trella, who served both as the county Sheriff and the BCPD Chief, held a press conference at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah Tuesday afternoon to argue against a proposed ordinance that would disband the BCPD and incorporate some of its functions into the Sheriff’s Department. The three argued against points that have been presented by supporters of the merger — namely that it would be a cost savings to the county …

As president of PBA Local 134, I once again find myself in the unfortunate position of having to address yet another barrage of insults, misrepresentations, and outright lies directed at the men and women of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, by Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan. “Political Environment” In her August 17, 2012 press release, Ms. Donovan asserts that the Sheriff’s Office operates in a “political environment,” not a professional one. To the contrary, in Bergen County I can assure you the duties carried out by our sworn staff are done so in a strictly professional environment. Our sworn officers are hired and promoted like many other law enforcement officers throughout New Jersey; through the New Jersey Civil Service …

Sheriff Michael Saudino launches a new application that allows residents to track fugitives.
Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino announced the launch of 'Facecrook,' a website that allows visitors to search fugitives wanted in the county. Saudino said that this new application that appears on the Bergen County Sheriff's Office website allows people to search the site for any active outstanding warrants held by the Sheriff's office. Saudino said that Facecrook was designed as a way to utilize the power of technology in light of budget cuts and staffing constraints. According to a press release, Facecrook will drastically increase the number of eyes on the street. Through the use of 'pinmapping,' visitors to the site can view the last known whereabouts of Bergen County fugitives. Facecrook is linked to the Sheriff's Office …

About $40,000 recovered so far, sheriff says.
A Bergen County sweep nabbed 51 deadbeat parents who owed nearly $500,000 in child support payments, Sheriff Michael Saudino said in a statement Friday. One man caught in the sweep owed nearly $119,000, according to the sheriff’s office. The Sheriff’s Fugitive Warrant Unit carried out the arrests Tuesday through Thursday and officials have so far collected about $40,000 of the owed money. “These types of raids are important because these families are counting on this money to live and unfortunately these individuals have tried to skirt that responsibility,” Saudino said. “The Bergen County Sheriff Office has a reputation for executing these raids with great success." The raids took place without incident, the sheriff said. Bergen County’s …
Township police help brighten the day of local seven-year-old.
Teaneck Police were among 25 area departments that participated in the countywide “chief for a day” celebration to honor local young people with chronic health conditions. The youth were treated to a day of fun, including a behind the scenes look at law enforcement. In Teaneck, seven-year-old Chase Garner was named the department’s honorary “chief for a day” on June 1. The excitement began when Chase, in his own uniform, was picked up by police motorcade at Hawthorne School. Fellow classmates, who lined the sidewalk outside the school, burst into applause and cheers as Chase left for headquarters. “Chase, who was accompanied by his mother, father, sister and aunt, enthusiastically doled out high fives and handshakes as he made his way to …

Man severed monitoring bracelet this morning and fled parents' home, police say.
Authorities located the getaway vehicle of a Mahwah man who apparently cut off his ankle monitoring bracelet and fleed from his parents home Thursday morning, Mahwah Chief James Batelli said. The blue Chrysler was found on Lafayette Ave. in Suffern, without Paul Kramer, 33, inside it. "The Rockland County SWAT team and helicopter are now being called in to do a ground and air search for him," Batelli said. Kramer, who was facing a 15-year prison sentence for attempted murder, apparently ran from his parents’ Mahwah Road home Thursday morning after cutting off a monitoring ankle bracelet, Batelli said. “Late this morning, a dive team was called in because it was originally thought that he may have harmed himself at the lake at the corner of…

I agree with gun safety being taught in schools. It's funny because gun safety courses are offered, but certain of these parents wish not to seek training, but want to own guns.   more ›
