Hackensack River Crossing Closed 'Indefinitely'

Travelers advised to seek other routes.

The Court Street Bridge linking Bogota and Hackensack is closed indefinitely, Bogota Police announced Friday.  Travelers were advised to use other routes. It was not immediately clear why the bridge crossing was shut down.  The bridge reopened in February after being closed to repair damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. However, a $1 million repair project was expected to continue through March.  Much of the bridge structure was replaced as part of a 26-month upgrade project, northjersey.com reported.  Another nearby river crossing, the Anderson Street Bridge linking Teaneck and Hackensack, was restricted to one lane in each direction after an inspection last year found the structure needed major repairs.  Eleven bus routes carrying 2,000 …

Local Bar Named Top Pick for Craft Beer

Magazine has praise for Bogota craft beer bar

Andy's Corner Bar, just over the border on Queen Anne Road in Bogota, has been named one of state's top picks for craft beer by New Jersey Monthly.  "This low-key neighborhood stalwart is a throwback to an earlier time—save for the hip beer selection," the magazine wrote of the local watering hole.  Owned by George and Barbara Gray, Andy's offers 10 craft beer taps. The bar traces its routes to Teaneck when the owners of a home brewing store in the township approached Gray about offering craft beer nearby.  "I don't know how to put this without sounding offensive," Gray told Patch in a 2010 interview. "But craft beers draw a more sophisticated crowd, not as much of the young guys who started fights and caused noise violations." Gray and …

Fuel Trail Leads to Alleged Hit-and-Run Driver

A 24-year-old township man allegedly fled the scene after hitting a pole in Bogota.

Bogota police charged a 24-year-old Teaneck man after officers traced a trail of fuel from a hit-and-run crash to the man's home early Sunday, northjersey.com reported.  Kenneth Shaw allegedly hit a pole at East Fort Lee Road and Palisade Avenue around 3 a.m., but fled the scene, the report said. Officers followed the leaking fuel to Beech Street in Teaneck where Shaw's car was found parked outside his home.  Police said Shaw's blood alcohol level came in at 0.18, above the legal limit of 0.08 percent, according to the report. Shaw was charged with careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence.  Follow Patch on Twitter, Facebook and click to sign up for Breaking News Alerts. News tip? Hoyt and other workers were moving the crate from one truck to another at the parking lot of Blue Hill Plaza in Pearl River when the accident occurred, according to police and a notice from the Volk Leber Funeral Home. "They had loaded computer stuff on the white truck from the building," Orangetown Police Detective Sgt. George Garrecht told Patch last week. "That big truck couldn't get down there with a forklift. They loaded that up with about six of those boxes with computer parts or mainframes. They backed the two trucks together and put the lift gates …

I think having traffic lights out on Cedar Lane, Palisades, Queen Anne days after a storm is inexcusable. I thin having parts of major roads still blocked off, like Queen Anne is rediculous. If everyone knew 3-5 days before the storm that this was much worse than Irene and the October 2011 ice storm, why are we only NOW flying in additional utility trucks and cherry pickers on army cargo jets [I …   more ›

'Marginal' Savings from Teaneck Police Merger, Study Finds

Combining three police departments would bring $75K in savings per town, report finds.

A county-funded study recommended against merging the Teaneck, Bogota and Little Ferry police departments, saying the move would offer only "marginal" savings and was unlikely to increase the level of service in the three communities.  Consolidating the departments would lead to $225,000 in combined savings for the three towns, according to a report by Blue Shield Consulting LLC. The merger would offer only $75,000 in savings per town.  Each department was already meeting the needs of its residents and a change would only be suggested if it offered taxpayers a larger cost-saving, the report said.  Savings would be achieved by the elimination of two police chiefs, two captains, two lieutenants and at least one sergeant. Blue Shield, however…

County Police Officers Accused of Lying, Tampering with Crime Scene

Two county officers indicted Monday on official misconduct charges for alleged cover-up following six-town police chase.

Two Bergen County police officers were indicted Monday on charges they worked to hide evidence and lied to investigators following a six-town car chase where one officer allegedly opened fire on a burglary suspect in Bogota.  The seven count indictment alleges Bergen County Police Officer Saheed Baksh, 37, removed shell casings from a crime scene after he fired two shots at Francesco Piserchia, who authorities said led officers on a chase from Paramus to West Shore Avenue in Bogota.  Although Baksh fired, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said the casings "which were originally observed at the shooting scene on West Shore Avenue" later went missing.  Another county officer who responded, 52-year-old Jeffrey Roberts, failed to "…

Officials to Meet on Hackensack River Flooding

County officials and representatives from United Water hold meeting Monday to discuss the increase in repetitive flooding in towns along the Hackensack River.

NEW MILFORD - On the heels of Mayor Ann Subrizi's meeting with the DEP on Tuesday regarding repetitive flooding of homes and businesses along the Hackensack River that included officials from River Edge and Oradell, the county has arranged a meeting of the mayors and affected residents of flood prone towns, along with representatives from United Water, for Monday July 2 at 7 p.m. at One Bergen County Plaza in Hackensack.  The Hackensack River flows into the Lake DeForest reservoir before flowing downstream into the Lake Tappan reservoir. From here it flows south throughout the suburban communities of Oradell, where it forms the Oradell Reservoir, and continues to flow into several streams, such as the Pascack and Hirschfield Brooks, as it …
