Hearing on Proposed Walgreens To Be Postponed

Residents have raised traffic safety concerns over the proposed drive-through pharmacy

A public hearing on a developer's application to build a Walgreens drive-through on Cedar Lane is set to be postponed until May.  A special zoning board meeting was planned to continue hearing the application, however, an attorney for the developer requested it be postponed to May 16, according to the township.  The zoning board will meet Thursday night to officially carry the hearing.  Walgreens is seeking permission to build at the former Davis Toy Store, Larry's gas station and the closed Louie's Charcoal Pit location.  Residents have raised concerns over the safety of the store's planned drive-through and argued the chain pharmacy was not the right fit for Teaneck's main shopping district. The project is not without its supporters, …

Art, if what you suggested could be done they would have presented that plan at Thursday's meeting. Unless developer can pull a rabbit out of a hat, the vocal minority has won. Teaneck seems to prefer vacant stores and contaminated gas station. To quote our Chamber President competition has no place on Cedar Lane yes Art he wrote a letter filled with wonderful statements like that, i guess he was…   more ›

Letter: Walgreens Could Jumpstart Cedar Lane Revitalization

Proposed Walgreens store on Cedar Lane will offer tax revenue boost, letter says.

The following is a letter to the editor submitted by Elie Y. Katz, a Teaneck councilman:  Let me start by saying that I am not writing this in any official capacity, but rather to express my views as a resident and tax payer concerned about the future of Cedar Lane and the tax base of Teaneck. If I were making the decision of what store to place on Cedar Lane and its location, I probably would not have chosen another pharmacy and certainly not next door to CVS and J&J. In my opinion, another pharmacy in Teaneck is needed as much as another bank, ATM or nail salon. In the last year and a half, I have heard from residents, read articles, and driven past many of the stores on Cedar Lane that are for rent, lay vacant and give the impression …

Esther in Englewood as in Teaneck we are still segregated. Those businesses opened on the other side of the tracks too far from municipal lot, wrong side. Some things never change. Panera Bread and Cold Stone would have been very successful in Englewood they just had wrong location. Today i passed new Al's Charcoal pit like Louies Charcoal pit not a customer. Op-Ed: Proposed Walgreens Would Harm Teaneck Businesses

One and two story retail buildings should be redeveloped as taller, mixed residential and retail space, resident writes.

The following is an op-ed submitted by Teaneck resident Michael Rogovin: The recent closure of several long standing businesses does not bode well for our town and thus it may be tempting for the Board of Adjustment to approve the variances requested to bring a new business that wants to open. However, doing so places short-sighted gratification ahead of long term health, much as eating high-fat, high sugar foods makes you feel good, until you end up overweight. As I will detail below, Walgreens will not, in fact, help the town’s business hub regain momentum. In fact, it will likely hurt in the long run. While many may clamor for national retailers, this is actually unhealthy for a small town. Unlike locally-based retailers, who live and …

Ex-Louie's Waiter to Open New Teaneck Eatery

Diner-style restaurant planned on Cedar Lane

A former waiter at Louie's Charcoal Pit, which closed last year, is set to open a new restaurant next month not far from the longtime Teaneck landmark.  The new diner-style eatery, called Al's Charcoal Pit, will open at what was Mabat Steakhouse at Cedar Lane and Elm Avenue, and be run by the popular Louie's staffer K. M. S. Alom, known to most customers as Al.  In an interview Tuesday, he said loyal Louie's fans have been asking him to launch his own diner since the Cedar Lane staple closed. Al said he was approached with an opportunity to run the new eatery and jumped at the chance.  "They said 'I want to see you again,'" the 20 year Louie's veteran said, adding customers had been calling and sending letters since Louie's shut down.  …

Walgreens Plan Sparks Safety Concerns in Teaneck

Developer presents traffic safety measures for proposed drive-through pharmacy

A proposed drive-through Walgreens pharmacy on Cedar Lane has prompted concerns over traffic safety and congestion from area residents and township officials.  Representatives of Win Development LLC, which is seeking permission to build the store in place of the closed Louie's Charcoal Pit, an adjacent corner gas station and the former Davis Toys, maintained that the drive-through traffic would be minimal and offered to install a host of pedestrian safety devices.  Under the proposal, drive-through customers would travel to the rear of the store and exit onto Cedar Lane across the sidewalk on a driveway between the pharmacy's eastern end and the next-door property, according to plans filed with the township. Motorists would only be allowed…

Developer to Detail Walgreens Plan at Teaneck Hearing

Plan calls for drive-through pharmacy on Cedar Lane

A developer seeking to build a Walgreens pharmacy in place of three Cedar Lane structures is set to appear before the township zoning board Thursday night.  Win Development LLC has unveiled plans to demolish the former Louie's Charcoal Pit, the vacant Davis Toys and corner gas station Larry's Friendly Service to make way for the pharmacy. The project includes a drive-through, 26 space parking lot and additional driveways.  Residents have raised concerns over the potential traffic impact from a drive-through and balked at the prospect of a third drug store opening in the immediate area.  The property owners, however, have said they are struggling financially and Walgreens is their only serious offer.  Thursday's public meeting is set for 7 …

POLL: What Do You Think Of The Walgreens Plan?

Should Walgreens open on Cedar Lane? Why or why not? How else would you like to see the properties used?

A developer's plan to build a Walgreens on Cedar Lane has drawn criticism from some residents and merchants who said the drug store would force others out of business and not fit with the town's shopping district. Win Development LLC is seeking to build a Walgreens at the former Louie's Charcoal Pit, the vacant Davis Toys and corner gas station Larry's Friendly Service. The landlord for the former toy store and the gas station's owner said they have been struggling and Walgreens is the only viable option for the location. IF they put a Walgreen's there they will surely put J & J pharmacy out of business. Then we will have another store empty. The whole idea is to put more businesses on Cedar Lane not to take away another. I know that Larry's Sunocco have a right to sell to whomever that want, but I hope they do not sell to Walgreen's and hold out to sell to something better than a store that will surely put a …   more ›

Residents Question Cedar Lane Walgreens Plan

Walgreens proposed across from local pharmacy and near a CVS

A public hearing on the Walgreens project will be held Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Teaneck Public Library A proposed Walgreens drugstore on Cedar Lane includes a drive-through window, dozens of parking spaces and would benefit consumers by adding new competition to the area, representatives for the project said at a community meeting. Some residents and Cedar Lane merchants, however, contend the chain store is entering a market already well-served by two drug stores and would not fit in with other nearby stores.  Win Development LLC has submitted plans to build the Walgreens at the former Louie's Charcoal Pit, the vacant Davis Toys and corner gas station Larry's Friendly Service. The plans call for the existing buildings to be torn down to …

Our town has found another reason for people to avoid Cedar Lane. They are posting plain clothes police in cross walks to hand out tickets. They are following a town that has the highest rate of these problems. Why punish teaneck residents for problems that exist in other places. Massive Oak Becomes Teaneck Historic Site

"Living witness" becomes first historic tree in Teaneck

The centuries-old red oak tree at the corner of Cedar Lane and Palisade Avenue is now officially a historic site, the first tree to receive such a designation in Teaneck.  Residents have long fought to preserve the massive oak, and the town council last week formally marked the tree as the Teaneck's 16th historic site.  The tree is said to be 250 to 300 years old and located on the site of the former Samuel Campbell farmhouse, built sometime before 1837. The property once stretched from the Hudson River to Hackensack River.  "The tree was standing before the birth of our nation and before George Washington's retreat over the Hackensack River at Historic New Bridge Landing and, as such, is a remnant of a rural landscape that contributes to …

Cedar Lane Walgreens Developer Seeks Public Input

Proposed pharmacy could replace Louie's and two other Cedar Lane properties. Public meeting scheduled for Thursday night.

The developer seeking to build a Walgreens on Cedar Lane will hold a public meeting Thursday night to share details of the project and gather community input, a representative said today.  The pharmacy is planned in place of three adjacent properties, including the shuttered Louie's diner and a corner gas station at Cedar Lane and Elm Avenue.  "We think we have an excellent application that will revitalize Cedar Lane," said Victor Herlinsky, an attorney representing the project.  Plans call for the Walgreens to include a drive-through, and Herlinsky said additional details would be shared at the meeting.  If built, Walgreens would become the third drug store in the immediate area. Another Walgreens store on Cedar Lane closed and is now a …
