County expected to remove massive oak within weeks.
A centuries-old red oak tree at Cedar Lane and Palisade Avenue is set to be removed by the end of the month after independent experts agreed with a county report that the tree posed a safety risk, officials said Wednesday. A tree expert hired by Bergen County concluded the oak was decaying and presented a hazard to people and property, Patch reported last week. Experts hired by the Puffin Foundation, which donated money to preserve the tree, agreed with the county's report after an inspection on Tuesday, said Jeanne Baratta, chief of staff at the Bergen County Executive’s Office. Officials planned to remove the tree May 30 or 31, Baratta said. The Puffin Foundation’s experts are also exploring “cloning” the tree. William R. Comery, the …

Efforts ongoing to reopen Cedar Lane theater
The owner of the planned Teaneck Cinemas on Cedar Lane is offering up free movie theater seats as he works to renovate the town's only movie house. Matthew Latten, who signed a lease in April for the former Cedar Lane Cinemas, told Patch last week that work was set to begin to modernize the theater. An initial July opening might have to be delayed until August, he said. The town's Planning Board recently approved a digital LED marquee for the theater. For now, Latten is asking anyone interested in the old seats to e-mail him at teaneckquad@gmail.com. Related News: Follow Patch on Twitter, Facebook and click to sign up for News Alerts. News tip? New digital marquee among upgrades planned at Cedar Lane movie house
The township's Planning Board recently approved a digital marquee at Teaneck's only movie theater, but the cinema's reopening could face a delay over missing paperwork, the theater's new operator said. Matthew Latten, who signed a lease for the shuttered Cedar Lane Cinemas in April, said existing plans for the space were missing, causing a slight delay in the start of renovations at the theater. "Yesterday is where I wanted to be three weeks ago," he said Thursday, explaining that crews had to draw up new plans. "We're getting close." The new Teaneck Cinemas is set to undergo extensive renovations, but much of the construction hasn't started yet, he added. "I know I was really hoping for a July 1 opening, but we might push back about a …

New restaurant to offer late night eats on Cedar Lane
A new Cedar Lane restaurant launched by a former waiter at Louie's Charcoal Pit is scheduled to open Sunday morning. Al's Charcoal Pit, a diner-style eatery at the former Mabat Steakhouse location, will open at 7 a.m., according to ex-Louie's staffer K. M. S. Alom, known to most customers as Al. The restaurant will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to midnight, with a 24-hour schedule planned, he told Patch Saturday. The menu include everything from breakfasts, burgers and steaks to soups and Greek-fare, he told Patch in a March interview. A group of Teaneck residents plan to gather early tomorrow for the unofficial opening. Al's former employer, longtime Teaneck favorite Louie's Charcoal Pit, closed late last year. A developer's …

Nearby city plans wireless internet, jazz concerts in downtown shopping area
- BUSINESS

Tuesday, April 23
In recent weeks, Patch has reported on Englewood's effort to make wireless Internet available to downtown shoppers and the city's expanded jazz concerts. The initiatives have been billed as ways to attract visitors to Englewood and to local merchants. Meanwhile, Teaneck residents shared concerns over the Cedar Lane shopping area. Some cited Blue Laws and parking as why Teaneck's main shopping district has struggled. Do you regularly shop in Teaneck? What would encourage you to shop in town more? Should the township take on projects similar to Englewood? How do you think Teaneck can attract more shoppers to Cedar Lane and other business areas? Share your views in the comments section below.

Residents have raised traffic safety concerns over the proposed drive-through pharmacy
A public hearing on a developer's application to build a Walgreens drive-through on Cedar Lane is set to be postponed until May. A special zoning board meeting was planned to continue hearing the application, however, an attorney for the developer requested it be postponed to May 16, according to the township. The zoning board will meet Thursday night to officially carry the hearing. Walgreens is seeking permission to build at the former Davis Toy Store, Larry's gas station and the closed Louie's Charcoal Pit location. Residents have raised concerns over the safety of the store's planned drive-through and argued the chain pharmacy was not the right fit for Teaneck's main shopping district. The project is not without its supporters, …

Proposed Walgreens store on Cedar Lane will offer tax revenue boost, letter says.
- OPINION

Thursday, April 11
The following is a letter to the editor submitted by Elie Y. Katz, a Teaneck councilman: Let me start by saying that I am not writing this in any official capacity, but rather to express my views as a resident and tax payer concerned about the future of Cedar Lane and the tax base of Teaneck. If I were making the decision of what store to place on Cedar Lane and its location, I probably would not have chosen another pharmacy and certainly not next door to CVS and J&J. In my opinion, another pharmacy in Teaneck is needed as much as another bank, ATM or nail salon. In the last year and a half, I have heard from residents, read articles, and driven past many of the stores on Cedar Lane that are for rent, lay vacant and give the impression …

One and two story retail buildings should be redeveloped as taller, mixed residential and retail space, resident writes.
The following is an op-ed submitted by Teaneck resident Michael Rogovin: The recent closure of several long standing businesses does not bode well for our town and thus it may be tempting for the Board of Adjustment to approve the variances requested to bring a new business that wants to open. However, doing so places short-sighted gratification ahead of long term health, much as eating high-fat, high sugar foods makes you feel good, until you end up overweight. As I will detail below, Walgreens will not, in fact, help the town’s business hub regain momentum. In fact, it will likely hurt in the long run. While many may clamor for national retailers, this is actually unhealthy for a small town. Unlike locally-based retailers, who live and …

Did the tree get xrayed? Yes there is a way to see how badly the tree is inside. Did a couple of tree companies do this testing? This tree is no more dangerous than the hundreds that fell down during the storms. This tree remains quite in tact. A piece of history is a piece of history. If it must come down, I agree that the healthy parts be made into keepsakes and sold. Is this public land or …   more ›
