County expected to remove massive oak within weeks.
A centuries-old red oak tree at Cedar Lane and Palisade Avenue is set to be removed by the end of the month after independent experts agreed with a county report that the tree posed a safety risk, officials said Wednesday. A tree expert hired by Bergen County concluded the oak was decaying and presented a hazard to people and property, Patch reported last week. Experts hired by the Puffin Foundation, which donated money to preserve the tree, agreed with the county's report after an inspection on Tuesday, said Jeanne Baratta, chief of staff at the Bergen County Executive’s Office. Efforts ongoing to reopen Cedar Lane theater
The owner of the planned Teaneck Cinemas on Cedar Lane is offering up free movie theater seats as he works to renovate the town's only movie house. Matthew Latten, who signed a lease in April for the former Cedar Lane Cinemas, told Patch last week that work was set to begin to modernize the theater. An initial July opening might have to be delayed until August, he said. The town's Planning Board recently approved a digital LED marquee for the theater. New digital marquee among upgrades planned at Cedar Lane movie house
The township's Planning Board recently approved a digital marquee at Teaneck's only movie theater, but the cinema's reopening could face a delay over missing paperwork, the theater's new operator said. Matthew Latten, who signed a lease for the shuttered Cedar Lane Cinemas in April, said existing plans for the space were missing, causing a slight delay in the start of renovations at the theater. "Yesterday is where I wanted to be three weeks ago," he said Thursday, explaining that crews had to draw up new plans. "We're getting close." New restaurant to offer late night eats on Cedar Lane
A new Cedar Lane restaurant launched by a former waiter at Louie's Charcoal Pit is scheduled to open Sunday morning. Al's Charcoal Pit, a diner-style eatery at the former Mabat Steakhouse location, will open at 7 a.m., according to ex-Louie's staffer K. M. S. Alom, known to most customers as Al. The restaurant will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to midnight, with a 24-hour schedule planned, he told Patch Saturday. The menu include everything from breakfasts, burgers and steaks to soups and Greek-fare, he told Patch in a March interview. Decorated Teaneck PD motorcycle officer served the township for more than two decades.
Retired Teaneck Police Officer Charles "CJ" Mulligan walked out of headquarters to a string of handshakes, confetti and loud applause from crowds of fellow officers and other well-wishers after ending his last shift with the department Friday afternoon. Mulligan, a 25-year township police veteran, was then celebrated with a parade along Cedar Lane to the nearby Cottage Bar. The popular officer served in the traffic bureau and raked up scores of commendations during his service to Teaneck. The initiatives have been billed as ways to attract visitors to Englewood and to local merchants. Meanwhile, Teaneck residents shared concerns over the Cedar Lane shopping area. Residents have raised traffic safety concerns over the proposed drive-through pharmacy
A public hearing on a developer's application to build a Walgreens drive-through on Cedar Lane is set to be postponed until May. A special zoning board meeting was planned to continue hearing the application, however, an attorney for the developer requested it be postponed to May 16, according to the township. The zoning board will meet Thursday night to officially carry the hearing. Walgreens is seeking permission to build at the former Davis Toy Store, Larry's gas station and the closed Louie's Charcoal Pit location. Residents have raised concerns over the safety of the store's planned drive-through and argued the chain pharmacy was not the right fit for Teaneck's main shopping district. Katz, a Teaneck councilman: Let me start by saying that I am not writing this in any official capacity, but rather to express my views as a resident and tax payer concerned about the future of Cedar Lane and the tax base of Teaneck. If I were making the decision of what store to place on Cedar Lane and its location, I probably would not have chosen another pharmacy and certainly not next door to CVS and J&J. In my opinion, another pharmacy in Teaneck is needed as much as another bank, ATM or nail salon.
