Alleged 'James Bond Gang' Burglars Plead Not Guilty

Teaneck man ordered held on $500,000 bail

Two alleged members of a Bergen County burglary crew that authorities have said is an offshoot of the notorious "James Bond Gang" pleaded not guilty in Sussex County this week. Leevan Lawrence, 31, of Englewood, Courry Rice, 30, of Hackensack, entered their pleas before Newtown Superior Court Judge N. Peter Conforti, according to the New Jersey Herald. Sparta police arrested both men in February alongside 32-year-old Jerry Montgomery, of Teaneck. The trio faces third-degree theft, third-degree conspiracy to commit burglary and theft, fourth-degree criminal mischief and third-degree burglary charges. Alleged 'James Bond Gang' Burglars Indicted

Teaneck and Englewood men face host of charges in Sussex County case.

Three alleged thieves linked to Bergen County's "James Bond Gang" were indicted this week in Sussex County on charges stemming from a burglary in Sparta, the New Jersey Herald reported Thursday.  Leevan Lawrence, 31, of Englewood, Courry Rice, 30, of Hackensack, and the crew's purported ringleader, 32-year-old Jerry Montgomery of Teaneck, were charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree theft, third-degree conspiracy to commit burglary and theft, and fourth-degree criminal mischief, according to the report.  "I don't anticipate that we will be making a plea offer," Sussex County First Assistant Prosecutor Gregory Mueller told the newspaper.  Montgomery was being held at the Sussex County Jail on $500,000 bail. Englewood Hospital Seeks Expansion

Hospital seeks three-story addition to one building, and a one-story addition at another.

Not to be outdone by competitors Valley Hospital and Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC), Englewood Medical Center has submitted plans to expand. According to a report on northjersey.com, the hospital has submitted plans to the Englewood zoning board to increase the height of its humanistic care center from 30 feet to 87.33 feet.  The project aims to move cancer treatment programs into one building, the report said. Another one-story expansion is also proposed for part of the building on Glenwood Road.  In addition, the project calls for tearing down an administrative building called North Annex, according to the report. Ten parking spaces would be added.  HUMC is finishing its construction work at the revived Pascack Valley …

Education Town Hall Planned in Englewood

School funding among topics for discussion at Saturday event.

Community Baptist Church will host a town hall meeting on public education Saturday.  The discussion will include topics ranging from the closure of neighborhood schools to funding. Information on special education, free and reduced school lunch, and online testing will also be presented.  The event, called “The People’s Town Hall Meeting on Public Education Issues & Solutions,” will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 224 First Street in Englewood.  More information is available on the event's Facebook page.

Englewood Man Charged in Fake Taxi-Parts Case

Counterfeit car parts scam included brakes and brake pads, according to federal court papers.

An Englewood man sold knock-off auto parts to unwitting customers, including repair shops that service New York City's taxi and livery cab fleet, federal authorities announced Tuesday. The 28-year-old city man, Fadi Kilani, was one of three people charged in an alleged scam to peddle repackaged car parts as ones made by brand-name manufactures, including Ford Motor Company and General Motors.  “As alleged, these defendants sold the automobile replacement parts equivalent of designer knock-offs, but represented to their unsuspecting customers that they were buying the ‘name brand,’ Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement. Detectives Foil Alleged Robbery Plot

Gun found, Englewood man charged following investigation by Teaneck and Bergen County detectives, prosecutor says.

Authorities have charged an Englewood man in a plot to rob a local liquor store distributor after the merchant told Teaneck police he was being followed by would-be bandits, the prosecutor's office said Monday.  Dammen McDuffie, 38, was charged Friday with stalking, conspiracy to commit robbery and attempt to commit robbery. Another unidentified man remains at large, authorities said.  The intended victim alerted Teaneck police on Dec. 21 that he was being followed by "multiple individuals" to and from his business, and feared he would be robbed, according to Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Sandy Relief Concert Planned at BergenPAC in Englewood

Money raised will go to charities supporting Sandy victims, according to bergenPAC.

The Bergen Performing Arts Center will host a Sandy relief concert next month featuring some of Broadway’s top performers with all of the proceeds going to three charities, the center announced. The show will include the “world’s best tap dancer Savion Glover, poet Carlos Andrés Goméz, plus established Broadway Stars including Bobby Creighton, Ali Ewoldt, Joy Hermalyn, Adam Jacobs, Elisabeth Stanley, Ali Stroker and more to be announced,” a news release said. Food Pantry Lacking Turkeys, Thanksgiving Donations After Sandy

Englewood’s Center for Food Action is more than 1,000 turkeys short this year, with their annual distribution set to begin Friday, because Sandy forced them to focus their efforts elsewhere.

In a typical year, the Englewood-based Center for Food Action (CFA) distributes more than 3,000 Thanksgiving packages to local families facing the holiday without a meal. But this is anything but a typical year. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, during which CFA was focused on getting food to families without basic necessities like power or heat, the food pantry’s annual Thanksgiving distribution was not a priority, and now it’s in serious jeopardy. Because of the storm, people weren’t donating to the Thanksgiving cause, and with distribution set to begin Friday, the CFA is an estimated 1,000 to 1,200 turkeys short, according to a spokesperson. “We’re looking for a miracle because the storm has overshadowed Thanksgiving, and …
