Teaneck Man Indicted in Englewood Knife Attack

An alleged pimp from Teaneck is accused in the Englewood stabbing, reports say.

An alleged pimp from Teaneck has been indicted on charges he stabbed a man in Englewood in a case of mistaken identity, northjersey.com reported Tuesday.  Joan M. Rincon, 32, allegedly broke into an apartment on Tenafly Road July 15 and was screaming "where is my sister?"  The 35-year-old victim's wife and three young children were home during the violent attack, according to an NJ.com report. An investigation found that another tenant in the building had a prostitute at his apartment and had argued with her earlier.  Police believe the prostitute called Rincon and told him she was being held against her will at the building, the report said. Rejected Hebrew Immersion Charter School Appeals State Decision

Federal grant money on hold for proposed Shalom Academy Charter School, official says.

Proposed Hebrew immersion charter school Shalom Academy has appealed a state decision blocking the school from opening and denying it another year to prepare, education officials said Tuesday. State Education Commissioner Chris Cerf in July rejected the school’s bid to open in Teaneck and refused its request for another planning year. In a letter to Shalom Academy, Cerf said the school had not proven it was ready and could not supply the required documents, including fire and building inspections. Cerf’s decision came after the school was first granted a planning year in 2011 to secure a location. A spokeswoman at the U.S. Department of Education, which awarded Shalom Academy a $200,000 grant last year, confirmed the school had filed an …

Englewood to Pay $22K to Preserve Land Once Owned by 'Father of Teaneck'

Work on Mackay Park Gatehouse expected to begin soon, report says.

Englewood has awarded a contract to create a plan to preserve the last remaining structure of a mansion once owned by a former Teaneck congressman in the city’s Mackay Park, the Northern Valley Suburbanite reported Thursday. The city will pay about $22,000 to match a grant for the $44,000 contract, the report said. About $100,000 in repairs have already been completed on the Mackay Park Gatehouse, which also houses Englewood’s recreation department. Work is expected to begin shortly and include a structural assessment, review of heating, electric and other infrastructure, the report said. William Walter Phelps, once a congressman and ambassador, owned the structure in the 1880s as part of a sprawling estate that stretched across the area, …

Coupons will be honored until expiration, site says.

NYPD officers found the 18-year-old when checking on a noise complaint, officials say.

An Englewood teenager missing for more than two months was arrested by New York City police after officers found her in the Bronx early Thursday, according to authorities and a family spokesman.  Officers investigating a noise complaint found 18-year-old Caroline Starkman, according to Robert Miller, a family friend.   Starkman was charged with endangering the welfare of a child for allowing a minor to consume alcohol, an NYPD spokesman told Patch.  Miller said Starkman was treated for a broken hand and taken into police custody.
