Case against two academics prompted calls for new laws around prostitution websites
The New Mexico Supreme Court will hear arguments next month in the case of a now-retired Fairleigh Dickinson University professor and former university president accused of running an online brothel, the Albuquerque Journal reported Wednesday. Albuquerque authorities had alleged that the Metropolitan Campus professor, David Flory, and ex-University of New Mexico president F. Chris Garcia ran "Southwest Companions,” a website that linked prostitutes with johns and offered tips on how to spot undercover officers. The prosecution hit a snag when a New Mexico judge said grand jurors hearing the case would have to be told of his ruling that a website message board could not be considered a "house of prostitution," the report said. …

Students asked not to return to campus until after storm passes, according to University statement.
Both of Fairleigh Dickinson University’s New Jersey campuses will close Sunday through Tuesday evening as Hurricane Sandy nears the area, the University announced. “Classes are canceled for Monday and Tuesday (October 29-30). Essential staff including campus safety and facilities staff are expected to report on schedule,” the school said in a statement on its website. Non-essential operations at FDU will end at 6 p.m. Sunday, according to the website. “Students who are away from campus are advised not to return until the emergency passes and to remain in a safe place. Students remaining on campus are advised to stay in close contact with the resident assistants and the Residence Life staff,” the statement added. Updates for the FDU …

Teaneck firefighters responded to a small fire in a Fairleigh Dickinson University dining hall early Wednesday morning, a campus spokeswoman said. The fire was reported at 3:45 a.m. in the Student Union Building, said University spokeswoman Dina Schipper. Although the flames were contained to a kitchen-area, student food service was not impacted. No major damage was reported and the building was open Wednesday, Schipper said. The cause was under investigation. The Student Union Building is located off River Road, near Maple Avenue.
