County resident fourth child to die from flu in New Jersey, officials say.
The past week has been no kinder to New Jersey residents suffering from the sniffles, cough and chills of the flu, state officials say, and has led to the death of a fourth child in the state, according to an NJ.com report. A 12-year-old Bergen County girl died earlier this month, Dawn Thomas, a state Health Department spokeswoman said in the report. The girl had underlying health conditions. Her name and hometown were not released. The current flu season continues to be one of the worst flu seasons in recent history, state Health Department officials say. New flu drug could be ready in three to five years, report says

A team at Holy Name Medical Center is testing a new drug that could fight strains of the flu resistant to drugs like Tamiflu, WABC-TV reports. "It means that we would have ways to fight influenza even if it becomes resistant to the existing drugs," Dr. Thomas Birch, medical director of the Institute for Clinical Research at Holy Name said in the report. Although still experimental, the drug could be available in about three to five years, the report said. Clinical trials for the Department of Defense-funded project stated Monday at Holy Name. Monday's meeting of the Assembly's Health and Senior Services Committee focused on ways the state can help relieve overextended and overwhelmed hospitals and doctors. Physicians and legislators also discussed steps everyone can take to lessen the severity of this year's flu season. Dr. Shelley Greenman, an emergency medicine physician at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, struck the appropriate note when she said she has never seen anything like the number and range of flu cases that she has encountered this year. New drug aims to relieve flu symptoms, report says.
A clinical trial of a new flu medication will begin Monday at Holy Name Medical Center, northjersey.com reports. Participants in the trial will be given a placebo or the drug, manufactured by Fugifilm Pharmaceuticals, the report said. Anyone involved in the study will need to be at the medical center's research facility for six days in a row and undergo basic medical tests. Participants with flu or flu symptoms must be between 18 to 80 years old without underlying health conditions. Holy Name is one of 70 sites across the country participating in the Phase 2 trial, which is overseen by the Department of Defense, according to the report. For more information, call 201-541-6315.

The following information was provided by the township: The Township of Teaneck will hold its influenza vaccination clinics Tuesday through Thursday on the following dates: October 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18 The clinics will be held at the Richard Rodda Community Center (Medical Outreach) between the hours of 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Registration is required by calling 201-837-0171 ext. 7023 between the hours of 9AM to 3PM. Applications will be completed on the day of visit. To be eligible to register for the clinic you must be 50 years of age or older, pregnant, or chronically ill with a doctor’s order. In addition, you must be a Teaneck resident.
