Company will remove 30 nests in the area, report says
PSE&G crews this week will remove 30 monk parakeet nests from utility poles in Fort Lee, Leonia and Edgewater, northjersey.com reported Wednesday. The birds were blamed with causing a power outage in December that impacted 3,400 customers in Leonia, Englewood Cliffs and Teaneck. Utility company officials say the removals are needed to prevent more electrical outages and short outs. Although PSE&G and parakeet supporters have clashed, this year's removal effort brought more collaboration, the report said. Two Bergen County men were charged in a scheme to sell guns believed to have belonged to the family of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced Thursday. Carola M. Quirola, 55, of New Milford, and 74-year-old Fort Lee resident Howard A. Blumenthal were charged along with David Phillip Ryan, 48, of Miami, FL, and Karlo Christian Sauer, 42, of Pittsburgh, PA. Federal prosecutors allege the foursome worked together to try to find a New Jersey buyer for the "Hussein Family Firearms," appraised at $250,000 to $350,000, authorities said. "During the course of the conspiracy, seven firearms were shipped to New Jersey for viewing by potential buyers," said a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office. …

With many gas stations out of fuel, those that remain open have lines stretching over a mile long and police standing by making sure panic does not set in.
The Shell, Delta and Sunoco gas stations that line River Road in New Milford are all out of gas and closed for business, making residents with cars and generators wondering where they can gas up. Stations that still had gas this morning were limiting distribution to generators only. The Hess Station adjacent to the DoubleTree Hotel in Fort Lee is the only gas station open on Route 4 East between Teaneck and the George Washington Bridge and, as of 3 pm, had a line of parked cars stretching well past the Grand Avenue exit in Englewood. Port Authority police said two men were caught Monday morning with 400 cartons of cigarettes they were allegedly taking from Virginia to New York City without paying New York taxes.
Port Authority police arrested two men at the George Washington Bridge Monday morning in connection with an alleged attempt to transport untaxed cigarettes to bodegas in Manhattan and the Bronx, officials said Tuesday. Officers Michael Brennan and Ryan Ust were patrolling the “High Occupancy Vehicle” (HOV) lane, which requires three or more occupants in a vehicle between 7 and 9 a.m. and leads to the upper level of the bridge, just after 8 a.m. Monday, when they pulled an SUV over with just two people in it, according to Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman. Nelson Otero, of Fort Lee, and Maxcine Cagan, of Floral Park, NY, were sentenced for shooting Officer Brian Wordell and robbing several gas stations and convenience stores at gunpoint in 2010.
A Fort Lee man who shot a Wayne police officer during a Route 23 gas station robbery in 2010 was sentenced Monday to more than 170 years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. U.S. District Judge Stanley Chesler in Newark Federal Court sentenced Nelson Otero, 48, of Fort Lee, to 174 years. His accomplice, Maxcine Cagan, 48, of Floral Park, NY, was also sentenced Monday to 172 years in prison. The men shot at Officer Brian Worell on May 10, 2010 at the Exxon station on Route 23 North. The officer was responding to a robbery at the station. Both men were convicted in April of all 15 counts charged against them. More than 200 injured veterans and supporters will set off from the Holiday Inn in Fort Lee on bicycle rides ranging from 13 to 62 miles later this month to honor injured veterans and those who have served in the U.S. military, Ride 2 Recovery (R2R) announced. The “Honor Ride” is the final part of R2R’s “Minuteman Challenge” which begins in Quincy, Mass. on Sept. 10 and covers more than 330 miles before finishing in Fort Lee on Sunday, Sept. 16. Participants will ride road bikes, hand cycles, recumbent bikes and tandems, many of which have been modified to accommodate specific injuries, according to organizers. Teaneck emergency crews assisted in hours-long rescue after two people were trapped in crushed car, officials say.
Three people were hospitalized Saturday after an early morning crash on the New Jersey Turnpike, including a teenage girl who was thrown from a car and a motorist trapped in the wreck, authorities said. The injured were in a Nissan Altima traveling on the highway’s northbound express lanes through Leonia around 12:30 a.m., according to state police in Newark. When the Nissan slowed for traffic, a tractor-trailer smashed into the back of the sedan, pinned it against the concrete divider and dragged it before slamming into a Lincoln Navigator. No foul play suspected, police said Monday night.
UPDATE: Missing Mother, Children Found Safe Police are asking for the public's help in searching for a Fort Lee woman and her three young children who have not been seen since Monday morning. Anne Zgonena, 40, along with her two daughters, 9-year-old Kate and 7-year-old Emma, and 3-year-old son Nicholas, were last seen at 9 a.m. Monday. "At this time it is a welfare check to make sure that all parties are ok," Detective Sgt. Leonard Cottrell said in an updated press release Monday night. Police said foul play is not suspected.
