State Issues Ozone Alert

Sensitive groups should exercise caution today

Ozone levels are expected to rise today, July 13, to levels dangerous for sensitive groups, the state Department of Environmental Protection has announced. Sensitive groups include the elderly, the very young and those who suffer from asthma and other respiratory conditions. These groups are advised to avoid strenuous activity during the afternoon and early evening hours. All residents are advised to avoid if possible activities that would add to air pollution today, such as vehicle use, mowing lawns, painting and wood burning. The Air Quality Index is forecast to be 105 today. Cooling Centers Opened As Heat Blasts Bergen

Cooling Centers provide relief to those without air condition as temperatures are expected to keep climbing throughout the week.

With temperatures expected to climb above 90 degrees throughout the week, carrying humidity that will make it feel closer to 100 degrees, officials reported that several designated Cooling Centers throughout Bergen County are open to offer relief from the heat.  In addition to official centers setup by county officials, Teaneck offered residents the chance to cool off at the Richard Rodda Center and Teaneck Public Library during normal operating hours. The extreme heat already led Teaneck school officials to move high school graduation. Excessive Heat Warning for Much of NJ This Week

Temps could reach triple digits

With temperatures across the state expected to spike within the next few days, possibly reaching 100 degrees, residents are being urged to stay safe in the hot weather.  "High temperatures and humid conditions have the possibility of making outdoor activities and non air-conditioned facilities extremely dangerous and uncomfortable," State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes said in a release. Fuentes, who also serves as the state's director of the Office of Emergency Management, said the excessive heat can cause a variety of health issues for people of all ages. County Opens Cooling Centers

Four locations in Bergen, with transportation available

In response to the National Weather Service issuing a Heat Advisory through Friday night, Bergen County officials announced four regional cooling centers: The centers will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., as needed Thursday and Friday. Transportation can be arranged by calling (201) 368-5955. Temperatures could climb to into the 100s, the county warned.
