PSE&G ‘Misled’ Teaneck in Sandy Response, Official Says

Residents and council members say more communication is needed in future storms.

Public Service Electric and Gas funneled incorrect information to Teaneck officials in the wake of Superstorm Sandy and the township should work to expand its own communications for future disasters, town council members and residents said Tuesday. Despite numerous conference calls and a meeting with PSE&G’s chief executive, Teaneck still struggled to glean any useful information on the company’s power restoration efforts, officials said. “We were misinformed and misled, whether it was due to incompetence or intentional misinformation, I am not entirely sure, but the result is the same,” said Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen. In one briefing with PSE&G, Gussen said he was told crews started work at a Teaneck power station following the storm. In …

Carol Kaplan I, too, question the advice to use your i-phone to get information from Facebook or Twitter, etc. during emergencies when the power is out. Not everyone has the advantage of an i-phone but many, many residents still have the good old-fashioned telephone that is wired to a telephone pole, not connected to cable systems,....it is still more reliable than anything else. Therefore, I …   more ›

Teaneck Looks to Thank Volunteers

Event tentatively set for May at Teaneck High School.

Teaneck officials are planning an event to recognize the township’s volunteers. Councilman Henry Pruitt said a date was tentatively set for May to host an event at Teaneck High School. Pruitt, along with other officials, are part of a council committee planning the recognition. “This enthusiastic committee is going to make it happen and give people a chance to be thanked for what they’ve been doing over the past many years,” Pruitt said Tuesday of the initiative. The township will create an online form for residents to submit local groups to be recognized, said Councilman Elie Y. Katz, who is also part of the effort. “It’s our way as a council to recognize all the volunteers in this town that help our residents,” he said.   Follow Patch on…

One seeking unexpired school board term.

Five candidates are running for seats on the Teaneck Board of Education, including one for the unexpired term of a board trustee who stepped down. Incumbents Gervonn Rice and David Diuguid are joined by newcomers Sarah Rappoport and David Gruber in vying for three seats, according to the Bergen County Clerk’s Office. Shelley Worrell is seeking the unexpired term vacated by Henry Pruitt, who resigned from the school board after winning a seat on the town council, clerk’s records show. The board is expected to officially accept Pruitt’s resignation at the June 13 public meeting. The board is accepting applications to fill Pruitt’s seat until the election. Those interested in applying should submit a resume and letter of interest by June 22, …

Beware of Rappoport. She is a disciple of Barbara Toffler. Her daughter worked for Toffler last summer or the summer before. Toffler actually thanked Rappoport after she lost the council election.   more ›

School Board Member to Resign for Council Seat

Residents can apply to fill vacant Board of Education post.

Teaneck Board of Education trustee Henry Pruitt will resign from the school board effective July 1, to be sworn in as a Township Council member. The Board of Education will officially accept his resignation at the June 13 public meeting, according to a district press release. Pruitt was elected in May to his first four-year term on the town’s governing body. “The Board and Administration acknowledges and thanks Dr. Pruitt for his selfless service to the children, parents and taxpayers of Teaneck and wishes him well in his new role as a member of the Township Committee,” the press release said. State law prohibits Pruitt from serving on both the council and school board. He is serving his third term on the school board and is a former board…

I am looking forward to some new faces on the Council. I am a little worried though about a comment made by Mr. Pruitt in today's Bergen Record. He said, "My intention is to form alliances with those people who are interested in the things I am interested in and work toward convincing the rest of the people if they want to listen to other points of view." What about the Teaneck residents that are…   more ›

Candidates Offer Ideas to Spur Economic Development in Teaneck

Collaboration with the school board also at issue.

With days left before the municipal election, the six council hopefuls detailed some of their ideas to boost Teaneck’s business climate and handle development at a candidate forum this week. Incumbents Monica Honis, Mohammed Hameeduddin and Barbara Toffler, along with council election newcomers Alexander Rashin, Mark Schwartz and Henry Pruitt, have recently faced questions on how they would spur economic development in a town where residents have voiced concerns about the tax burden and shuttered storefronts. At the Teaneck Community Charter School’s forum Tuesday, Schwartz pointed to the need for increased foot traffic. Schwartz, a planning board member and real estate consultant, said the Cedar Lane and Queen Anne Road business areas …

Development, Town Hall Schedule at Issue During Candidates Forum

Senior living on American Legion Drive, vacant storefronts also discussed.

Teaneck's six township council candidates took questions this week on issues ranging from commercial development, senior services and the much-debated four-day workweek for town employees.  Incumbents Monica Honis, Mohammed Hameeduddin and Barbara Toffler, along with council election newcomers Alexander Rashin, Mark Schwartz and Henry Pruitt, met Monday night at Teaneck High School for the League of Women Voters candidates forum.  The candidates did not directly engage each other, instead taking submitted questions.  A question on support for the town hall's current four-day schedule brought some of the more varied views from the six candidates.  Toffler, who has been vocal in her opposition to the building's four day schedule, said …

Jim, good question. There is a consultant's report in the library, paid for by the TEDC from about 2005. The reference librarians will show you where it is. It was an analysis of the development efforts in prior years and recommendations on what the Council should do going forward. My recollection of the report - to be confirmed when you see it - was that prior efforts were ineffective and not …   more ›

Council Candidates Talk Town Services, Diversity at Teaneck Forum [Poll]

Four-day workweek for town employees could change in union negotiations.

Residents quizzed the six Township Council candidates on issues ranging from diversity to the town’s four-day workweek during the Northeast Teaneck Block Association’s candidates forum at the Richard Rodda Center Monday night. Incumbents Monica Honis, Mohammed Hameeduddin and Barbara Toffler, along with council election newcomers Alexander Rashin, Mark Schwartz and Henry Pruitt are vying for three seats on the town’s governing body. While there was little back and forth between the candidates, one of the more debated issues was the town’s current four-day work schedule for most township offices. One resident questioned if closing on Fridays had saved any money. “There is no cost saving to the four-day workweek. We are not furloughing …

Dear Ms. Toffler, just from your statement "At this point there is no benefit to taxpayers in any way" You got my vote. I been a homeowner here in Teaneck for 16 years and I am embrassed to tell people the outragous taxes I pay for such reduced services. If you check out the foreclosure rate, Teaneck has the highest in Bergen County; these high taxes are part of this problem too.   more ›
