PSE&G ‘Misled’ Teaneck in Sandy Response, Official Says

Residents and council members say more communication is needed in future storms.

Public Service Electric and Gas funneled incorrect information to Teaneck officials in the wake of Superstorm Sandy and the township should work to expand its own communications for future disasters, town council members and residents said Tuesday. Despite numerous conference calls and a meeting with PSE&G’s chief executive, Teaneck still struggled to glean any useful information on the company’s power restoration efforts, officials said. “We were misinformed and misled, whether it was due to incompetence or intentional misinformation, I am not entirely sure, but the result is the same,” said Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen. In one briefing with PSE&G, Gussen said he was told crews started work at a Teaneck power station following the storm. In …

Carol Kaplan I, too, question the advice to use your i-phone to get information from Facebook or Twitter, etc. during emergencies when the power is out. Not everyone has the advantage of an i-phone but many, many residents still have the good old-fashioned telephone that is wired to a telephone pole, not connected to cable systems,....it is still more reliable than anything else. Therefore, I …   more ›

Teaneck Residents, Officials Want Answers on Snowstorm Power Outages

Churchill Road residents say the street has been hard hit by power failures.

Residents called on the Township Council to hold PSE&G accountable for widespread power outages caused by the powerful October nor'easter, as the cleanup process continued more than a month after the snowstorm. At Tuesday’s council meeting, a group of Churchill Road residents said some homes were in the dark for five days after the storm and lost power again a week later. “Being without power for five days certainly was beyond an inconvenience,” Churchill Road resident Chaim Book said. “The conditions of the trees and the wires are a very serious issue, yet as we see it, PSE&G has not stepped up to the plate.” Book also said his street was plagued with power outages before the snowstorm. “We would like to work with you so that PSE&G will …

Council Hires Law Firm to Defend Against Toffler Suit

Outside legal counsel hired in 5-1 vote.

The Township Council voted Tuesday to hire outside legal counsel to defend the governing body against a lawsuit filed by Councilwoman Barbara Toffler. Toffler sued the council last month claiming her constitutional rights to free speech and due process were violated when council members voted to censure her in February for accusations she made against Township Manager William Broughton and Police Chief Robert Wilson. In a 5-1 vote, the council appointed Thomas B. Hanrahan and Associates of River Edge as special counsel to represent the governing body. Outside legal services are needed because a sitting member filed suit against the council. The firm will charge $165 per hour, according to Township Attorney Stanley Turitz. Anticipated …
