Teaneck’s hometown Olympian Maya Lawrence was met with cheers and hugs from a crowd of fans at a reception in her honor Thursday night. Lawrence, who captured the bronze medal in epee fencing at the London Games, picked up the sport on a lark when friends convinced her to fence as a student at Teaneck High School. “Her friends kind of dragged her into it,” said her mother Pat Lawrence, who is also the high school’s fencing coach. Since her first match in Teaneck, Maya Lawrence has overcome two torn ACLs and grueling training in Paris to reach success at the London Games. Olympic Fencer Maya Lawrence will return to her hometown of Teaneck Thursday for a reception hosted by the recreation department, according to the township. Lawrence, a Teaneck High School graduate, and her team took home the bronze medal at the London games. Lawrence made her way to Olympic achievement after overcoming serious injuries. She graduated with honors from Princeton University and Columbia University Teachers College. Lawrence started fencing in her sophomore year at Teaneck High School. She worked for the town’s recreation department and is the daughter of Teaneck High School’s head fencing coach, Pat Lawrence. The Associated Press reports the American team beat Russia, 31-30. Lawrence was 1-1 in the medal match. "I'm so happy, so excited we got a medal — it's great! Olympic fencer Maya Lawrence, a Teaneck-native, will leave the London Olympics with one victory against Italy's Mara Navarria. Although the No. 24 ranked Lawrence lost Monday in the next round to Italian epee fencer No. 7 Rossella Fiamingo, her victory comes after she overcame serious injuries to reach London. A township resident and Teaneck High School graduate has qualified and will represent the United States in fencing at the 2012 Olympics in London. Maya Lawrence will represent the individual and team epee events, according to a news release issued Tuesday. Lawrence was third in the national championships, held in Virginia Beach, Va. “Maya is member of the first US women’s epee team to win a medal at a World Cup,” the release said. “The team won a silver medal in St. Maur, France, the last Olympic qualifying event for the 2012 Olympic Games.” Lawrence was a member of U.S. World Championship and National Teams in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2011.
