Five Democrats seeking party line
Former town council member Monica Honis is one of five Democrats vying for the party nomination to run for three Bergen County freeholder seats, the Record reported. Honis, a teacher, lost her bid for a third term on the council in May. At the time, her council colleagues credited her with taking on a range of community service initiatives. The other Democrats seeking the party's line are: The three selections will face Freeholders John Felice, John Mitchell and Maura DeNicola. Toffler, Honis honored by state lawmakers.
Two ongoing Teaneck council members were honored for their years of service this week, days before new members will be sworn in at a reorganization meeting. Barbara Toffler and Monica Honis, who lost their bids for re-election, were honored with a proclamation from District 37 lawmakers at Tuesday’s council meeting. Toffler lost her bid for a second term, while Honis was denied a third term. Councilman Elie Y. Katz, who often sparred with Toffler, noted how the two found common ground on some projects. Katz credited Honis with tackling a range of community initiatives, including a township clean-up event. “You're young, you're dedicated and you have a very good heart," Katz told Honis. Voters deny re-election bids of two council members.
Note: This report has been updated with new numbers provided by the Township Clerk Wednesday morning. The updated numbers now include vote-by-mail ballots. Teaneck’s mayor, a town ambulance service volunteer and a school board member won seats on the Township Council Tuesday night. Mohammed Hameeduddin, Bergen County’s first Muslim mayor, was re-elected by a wide margin, netting 4,501 votes, according to unofficial totals released by the town clerk. Mark Schwartz, a council newcomer and Planning Board member, won his first four-year term with 3,254 votes. With days left before the municipal election, the six council hopefuls detailed some of their ideas to boost Teaneck’s business climate and handle development at a candidate forum this week. Two more forums are planned for the six candidates vying for three seats on the Teaneck Township Council this week. The Jewish Center of Teaneck will host a forum at 8 p.m. Monday. The forum will include prepared questions for the candidates from the Teaneck Clergy Council as well as a question and answer session with the audience and candidates. Rabbi Lawrence Zierler will moderate the forum. The Center is located at 70 Sterling Place, near Cedar Lane. Crowds flocked to Puffin Foundation Sunday for the third annual Teaneck Latino Community Event. The event, hosted by local group Resource, Education and Awareness by Latinos (R.E.A.L.), featured food, live music and poetry readings. Organizers and attendees noted how the event has grown dramatically over the years. According to R.E.A.L., the group's mission is to "promote a positive awareness of the Latino community in Teaneck and to be a resource for Latinos and others, through education, advocacy and participation in cultural/social community events."
