State to Conduct Unannounced Security Checks at Schools

State augments rigorous regulations to further protect students and staff following Newtown school shooting.

In the weeks and months following the Newtown, CT, mass killing, much of the attention in schools has been on lockdown drills and how they can be practiced and adjusted to prevent or at least minimize casualties in the event of an armed intruder. They’re tough questions, but growing all too real. And there are others: Are teachers and staff prepared to respond protect themselves and their children? Are effective alerts in place, ones that warn of the presence of an "active shooter"? Can each room be secured and everyone in it shielded from harm? In the aftermath of the Newtown tragedy, New Jersey school officials have repeatedly said that the state’s requirements are as strict as any in the nation, calling for ongoing security planning and…

Families, friends of those killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School usher team onto field.

NORTH JERSEY — More than 200 students from Sandy Hook Elementary School were among 400 people from Newtown, Conn., who formed a tunnel for New York Giants players to run through as they took the field Sunday for their final home game of the 2012 season. A little more than two weeks after a 20-year-old gunman stormed into the Connecticut elementary school and killed 26 people, including 20 children, families, classmates and neighbors of the dead were bused to MetLife Stadium and given tickets to the contest by the Giants. The group of Newtown residents received high-fives and handshakes from the athletes as they entered the field. The students and their families then made a ring around the field, holding hands with Giants and Philadelphia …

NRA Calls for 'Armed Security' in Schools

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," the NRA's Wayne LaPierre said.

In a Friday morning press conference in Washington DC, the National Rifle Association broke its weeklong silence following the horrific shooting of 26 people at a school in Newtown, CT and called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around American schools. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for a new kind of American domestic security revolving around armed civilians, arguing that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." "We care about our president, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents," LaPierre said. "Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by Capitol Police officers. Yet, when it comes to our most beloved, innocent, and vulnerable members of the American family…

Schools chief says district upgraded security systems and staff are support students dealing with Connecticut tragedy.

The following message is from Teaneck Public Schools Superintendent Barbara Pinsak:   Dear Teaneck Parents and Guardians: Throughout the weekend, I have spoken to a number of parents about the tragedy in Newtown Connecticut and the topic of safety in our schools. The intent of this letter is to discuss the safety and also to provide you with information concerning supports for our students who might exhibit anxiety as a result of both the incident and the ensuing media coverage. First, the topic of safety. All school districts in New Jersey are mandated to review and update their safety plans annually. Newtown Massacre Prompts Gun Control Rally in Teaneck

Dozens gathered at a Cedar Lane rally to call for stricter gun laws and an end to violence following elementary school shooting in Connecticut.

Residents rallied Saturday night in Teaneck to call for stricter gun control laws in the wake of a shooting rampage that left 20 children and six adults dead at a Connecticut elementary school.  The crowd, organized quickly through the Internet and by the Ethical Culture Society, held candles and carried signs calling for tighter regulation of firearms and an end to gun violence. Teaneck resident Jim Norman said he hoped to continue holding rallies and push elected leaders to act.  "We feel it is time to move from mourning to action," he said. "This is the first in this area of what we hope will be non-stop action until America comes to its senses."  Norman, a parent who said he was brought to tears by the killings, called for restrictions…
