PSE&G project will also bring aesthetic improvements, company says.
Utility company work designed to improve the reliability of electricity service in the Teaneck-area is slated to be finished by January 2014, a PSE&G spokeswoman said Tuesday. PSE&G is working to upgrade its substations on Palisade Avenue, near the Richard Rodda Center, and another facility at the Teaneck-Bergenfield border, company officials have said. Work on overhead and underground lines has also been ongoing. In the Palisade Avenue upgrade, PSE&G brought in a large temporary substation to prevent any outages during the work, according to Barbara Lynch, a spokeswoman for the project. While the work will boost the aging stations capacity, Lynch noted the company also planned cosmetic improvements to the site. The station will no …

Company will remove 30 nests in the area, report says
PSE&G crews this week will remove 30 monk parakeet nests from utility poles in Fort Lee, Leonia and Edgewater, northjersey.com reported Wednesday. The birds were blamed with causing a power outage in December that impacted 3,400 customers in Leonia, Englewood Cliffs and Teaneck. Utility company officials say the removals are needed to prevent more electrical outages and short outs. Although PSE&G and parakeet supporters have clashed, this year's removal effort brought more collaboration, the report said. The birds are being removed in more mild weather. “This is probably the most ideal week to remove the nests,” Alison Evans-Fragale, of the Edgewater Parrot Society told the newspaper. “It will give the birds enough time to rebuild the …

More aggressive vegetation management could help keep lights on, trees off power lines
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, 7 million people were left without electricity -- many of them because more than 100,000 trees around New Jersey fell on power lines. If the state is going to avert widespread outages during major storms in the future, it needs to be a lot more aggressive about how utilities trim trees. That issue is emerging as a top priority of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, the Legislature, and the four electric utilities operating franchises across the state. The state regulatory agency has ordered the utilitiesand its staff to establish a working group to identify an improved tracking system to identify what kind of trees are liable to fall on power lines; whether they are live, diseased or dead; and …

The hard questions aren't going away, and it appears as if the agency needs to come up with better answers
It’s been quite a while since the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities appeared before the Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities Committee, but staffers showed up yesterday to talk about what they were doing to improve the utilities’ response to major storms, such as Hurricane Sandy. It may be some time before they show up again. Kristie Izzo, secretary for the BPU, was peppered with tough questions again and again from committee members dealing with the agency’s efforts to improve communication between utilities, customers, and local officials during extreme weather. That has been a recurring complaint not just throughout the recent superstorm, but also during events in 2011, like Hurricane Irene and a rare October snowstorm. In …

BPU proposal calls for quarterly reports about equipment failures, more aggressive tree trimming
By Tom Johnson, NJ Spotlight The state is looking to step up reporting requirements for New Jersey’s four electric utilities in the aftermath of the recent major storms that left millions of homes and businesses without power, many for a week or more. Beyond requiring more frequent and detailed reports of what and how often equipment fails during power outages, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities also may implement more aggressive efforts to trim trees and vegetation, which can also contribute to outages. The proposal, still a work in progress, is the latest undertaken by the regulatory agency in response to the huge storms that blasted New Jersey over the past 18 months, blacking out large portions of the state. The outages have led …

Public Service Electric and Gas plans to temporarily shut down power in sections of Teaneck Saturday to conduct “major improvements” on the area’s electricity supply, according to a statement issued by the township Monday. The specific areas of town were not immediately released, but the company planned to turn off service for an hour starting at 8 a.m., the statement said. “During the changeover to the new system, electrical service will be interrupted.
