Individuals should be wary of someone calling from the "disconnect collection department."
Public Service Electric & Gas is alerting its customers to a scam involving pre-paid debt cards. A Spanish-speaking individual pretending to be a PSE&G employee will call a customer saying they work for the company’s “disconnect collection department,” the company said in a press release Tuesday. The person tells the customer that they have an overdue balance and their service will be shut off that day unless they pay their balance using a prepaid debit card. Customers are told to purchase a Green Dot Money Pak card and put a balance on it and provide the cashier with the phone number of the person who called them. After the customer provides PSE&G with the card number, the scammer transfers the funds to a prepaid card and cashes it in at …

Scam promises to pay or credit utility bills.
A new scam using President Barack Obama’s name claims to provide utility bill credits in exchange for personal information, including social security numbers, according to Public Service Electric and Gas. “The scam, which has been reported in a number of states, claims that President Barack Obama is providing credits or applying payments to utility bills,” the company said in a statement. PSE&G offered the following details on how the scam works: • Someone calls a utility customer and tells them that the federal government has a program to pay utility bills on a one-time basis. • Customers are asked to provide their social security numbers to apply for the program. • The scammers then give customers a phony federal reserve bank routing …

By Tom Johnson, NJSpotlight.com The former Kearny garbage dump is a 66-acre plot of land, fallow for more than three decades, although practically within shouting distance of some of the most expensive real estate in the nation, with a bird’s eye view of the Manhattan skyline. Today, it may be emblematic of a new chapter in New Jersey’s development, as Public Service Electric & Gas and others yesterday dedicated a new 3-megawatt solar farm on 13 acres of the former landfill, producing enough electricity to power up to 500 homes. The $17.8 million solar farm project, a joint effort between PSE&G, the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission, and SunDurance Energy, an Edison-based solar developer, is the first solar project built on a …

No major weather-related incidents reported in the area.
The flood watch for parts of North Jersey has expired, with only a slight chance of rain through late Monday possible, according to the National Weather Service. Forecasters had warned of potential flooding in urban areas or those with poor drainage. Heavy rains soaked the area overnight Monday, but no major weather-related incidents were reported. Public Service Electric and Gas said about 300 customers were without power across its service area. There were no reported outages in Teaneck early Monday. The utility asked residents not to touch downed wires and report outages to 1-800-436-PSEG. The state’s Office of Emergency Management was monitoring storm conditions Sunday, the agency said in a news release over the weekend. “We are …

A shorter timeframe for power auctions and more in-state capacity could have made a bigger difference

By Tom Johnson, NJ Spotlight Most consumers may see a dip in their electric bills this June, but the drop is likely to ignite a recurring debate over whether the decline could have been much greater. For the fourth consecutive year, residential customers will see bills decrease by as much as $6.96 each month for customers of Jersey Central Power & Light to as little as $1.37 a month for those served by Rockland Electric. They can thank a steep drop in natural gas prices for the savings. But larger commercial and industrial customers, who use the bulk of electricity in New Jersey, saw the price they pay for power purchased in an annual auction run by the state increase by 7 percent. Since the auction price makes up only a small part of …
