Federal grant money on hold for proposed Shalom Academy Charter School, official says.
Proposed Hebrew immersion charter school Shalom Academy has appealed a state decision blocking the school from opening and denying it another year to prepare, education officials said Tuesday. State Education Commissioner Chris Cerf in July rejected the school’s bid to open in Teaneck and refused its request for another planning year. In a letter to Shalom Academy, Cerf said the school had not proven it was ready and could not supply the required documents, including fire and building inspections. Cerf’s decision came after the school was first granted a planning year in 2011 to secure a location. A spokeswoman at the U.S. Department of Education, which awarded Shalom Academy a $200,000 grant last year, confirmed the school had filed an …

School officials seek meeting with state education chief.
School media center upgrades, new social studies textbooks and curriculum initiatives are some of the district projects that could benefit from the $1.4 million once allocated to cover tuition for students enrolled at the proposed Shalom Academy Charter School. Still, Teaneck Board of Education President Ardie Walser cautioned the funds should not be viewed as extra money, as the district already made cuts to meet Shalom Academy’s requirements. “These are just a few ways in which we can use these funds,” Walser said of the possible initiatives. “Please note that the $1.4 million are not additional funds but rather funds that were pulled from programs that were part of the original 2012 - 2013 Teaneck school budget.” State officials denied…

Department of Education denies Shalom Academy Charter School application.
State officials rejected a bid to open a Hebrew immersion charter school for students in Englewood and Teaneck, saying the school had not proven it was ready and could not supply the required documents. Shalom Academy Charter School failed to provide a certificate of occupancy for educational use, a fire inspection certificate for educational facilities and a "sanitary inspection report with satisfactory rating," Acting Education Commissioner Chris Cerf wrote in a letter to school founder Raphael Bachrach. "The Board of Trustees and founders of Shalom Academy Charter School have not only failed to meet the necessary statutory and regulatory requirements to gain final approval, but have also not demonstrated overall leadership and …

State officials close two charter schools for poor performance, say charters are being held accountable.
The Teaneck Community Charter School was one of 16 schools granted a renewed five-year charter, the state Education Department announced Friday. After a four-year term, a charter school can be renewed in five-year increments, the Education Department said. In a news release, the state said it was continuing "aggressive oversight" of charter schools. “We are deeply committed to making sure that all children have a high-quality school option available to them, and the expansion of high-performing charter schools is a critical component of that effort,” Acting Education Commissioner Chris Cerf said in the release. “However, a critical part of our oversight efforts to ensure students are being served at the level they deserve is enforcing …

No virtual charter schools operating in New Jersey yet.
The proposed Garden State Virtual Charter School plans to have an almost $4.7 million surplus after its first year and offer a largely online curriculum, northjersey.com reported Friday. According to the report, the planned school will have a small facility in Teaneck with 36 teachers who would teach using web conferences and provide extra help for students who come in. Two online schools have been approved for the fall, but none are currently operating in New Jersey. Some have raised questions about the effectiveness of the online education programs. The state will announce if the virtual charter is approved in January. Another planned charter, Shalom Academy Charter School, has stirred controversy as critics have said its Hebrew-…
