Thousands of futball fans filed into Red Bull Arena in Harrison on Thursday night as the world's best player and his Argentinian national team prepped for a Saturday showdown with rival Brazil. Lionel Messi, the three-time defending FIFA player of the year, scored once on a header in the half-pitch intrasquad scrimmage as fans hung on his every move. A family argument led to the murder of a Deptford man early Friday morning, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office. Chad Gatewood, 45, and his nephew, Elijah P. Gatewood-Gabriel, 20, allegedly got in a confrontation around midnight, when Gatewood stabbed Gatewood-Gabriel multiple times with a kitchen knife in the family's apartment, GCPO spokesman Bernie Weisenfeld said. Tax collections in New Jersey are running $230 million behind Gov. Chris Christie's projections after April revenue came up short, according to a state Treasury report released Tuesday. The following item was submitted by the Teaneck Junior Soccer League: Teaneck Junior Soccer League (TJSL) announced that two of its indoor soccer travel teams completed successful seasons with appearances in league championship games today. The U10 Boys team won the Pascack Valley Indoor Soccer League’s (PVISL) “Golub Cup” championship with a 5-4 victory over Englewood Cliffs at Northern Valley High School – Old Tappan. The team reached the final with a thrilling 6-5 overtime win against Woodcliff Lake in the semifinals. On the girls’ side, the U12 indoor soccer travel team finished their season taking second place in PVISL’s “Otterstedt Cup”. The Highwaywomen drop their last regular season game to Paramus by a score of 4-0.
The Teaneck girls soccer team recognized their upperclassmen after their final regular season game against Paramus Thursday. The Highwaywomen (2-14-1) were unable to topple the Spartans (16-3), conceding four goals in their loss. Paramus, 4-0 winners on the day, played their second contest without leading scorer Sarah Cortes, who suffered a concussion Sunday against Immaculate Heart Academy. The Spartans attacked from the start of the first whistle and created a lot of offensive opportunities. Paramus got on the scoreboard eight minutes in, when Megan Lannigan took a pass from Lauren Fiorino and found back the of the net.
