Project would bring new athletic facilities to Teaneck's main park
The Teaneck Township Council has approved contracts in a multi-million dollar project to upgrade playing fields at the town's main park, a move that was met with wide support but also concerns from some residents. The council last week approved a $2.8 million contract to Hackensack-based Dakota Excavating Contractor Inc. to install artificial turf on Votee Park’s two main soccer fields and work on drainage improvements. Council also approved alternates including, field lighting, bleachers, scoreboards, markings for the scoreboards and a “press box,” adding $583,000 to the project, Patch reported last week. Sports groups and players hailed the move as a much needed improvement to the flood-prone fields. Some residents, however, said they …
Former Teaneck coach reflects on the history and future of town’s main park.
The following is a letter to the editor. To submit a letter, e-mail teaneck@patch.com There is a lot of history to Votee Park, which until the mid-1960s was known as Central Park. It had been created from a marsh area during the 1930s as a public works project as part of the relief and recovery elements of the New Deal. For most of its existence it has varied from an a multi-purpose recreational resource and a swamp. I grew across the street from Central Park, moving to a house on Queen Anne Road in 1947. It was our "front yard" for me and five siblings, a place where some played Jr. Ivy League soccer and/or football and a park where I worked as a playground leader for four summers in the early 1960s. Finally, I coached JV soccer and …

A massive red oak tree that has stood in Teaneck for centuries was cut down Monday after tree specialists determined it presented a safety risk to pedestrians and motorists in the area. Police are searching for a 26-year-old Teaneck man they say viciously stabbed another man at an Englewood restaurant late Friday. Senate Majority Leader Loretta …
