Teaneck School Board Nixes Outsourcing Plan

District moves ahead with cuts to courtesy busing

The school board has opted not to outsource some instructional paraprofessionals, lunchroom aides and substitute teachers, but left open the possibility of using outside staffers as district jobs become available. An initial $91.9 million budget introduced earlier this month called for outsourcing 46 lunch aides, 27 instructional aides and substitute teachers in a move to save $800,000. The $92.7 million budget approved Wednesday night saved the district positions after school board members heard widespread opposition from employees and parents, many of children in the special education program. Most members wanted to avoid outsourcing, but were faced with a tough financial reality, said Board of Education President Ardie Walser. The …

With a town that is trying to promote cleaner greener living, why are they cutting bus stops and cutting courtesy busing. Busing children is safer and cleaner. With fewer bus stops and courtesy busing minimized, more parents will be driving to school and/or bus stops creating additional congestion, pollution and safety issues. The board needs to stop being penny-wise and pound foolish. Look for …   more ›

Outsourcing Brings Mixed Reactions From Teaneck BOE

Board considers impact on taxes, township students

Teaneck Board of Education trustees are not all sold on a plan to outsource some district paraprofessionals, lunchroom aides and substitute teachers, the Record reported Monday.  Board of Education Vice President Gervonn Rice cited her positive experience with district paraprofessionals and Englewood's experience with outsourcing scores of secretaries and professional assistants.  "I personally would not like us to venture down that road," Rice told the newspaper.  The impact on Teaneck's minority residents, some of whom work in the jobs slated to be cut, was also a concern, the report said.  BOE Trustee Howard Rose said the board would take into account concerns raised by parents and staffers at a packed budget meeting last week. Rose …

The problem with outsourcing is that the subscriber (BOE) usually fails to manage the contract and sustain performance levels. Consider the level of performance of someone receiving $24K with no benefits and no hopes of promotion versus someone with receiving $36K with benefits. greater opportunities and appreciated relationships. Sometimes outsourcing is a more expensive venture to manage than …   more ›

Should Teaneck Outsource School Aides?

Share your views on the district's budget proposal

Teaneck's school board is considering outsourcing all 46 district lunchroom aides, 27 of 68 instructional aides and an unknown number of substitutes, Patch reported Tuesday.  The school board sent the $91.9 million spending plan to the county, but officials have stressed the budget can be modified before being adopted.  The proposal had drawn strong opposition from parents who spoke at a Board of Education meeting Monday night. They worry the outsourced instructional paraprofessionals won't be as dedicated to students as district employees have been.  School officials, however, have pointed to a decline in state funding and say any outsourced workers will be carefully vetted and managed. The proposed outsourcing would save $800,000 in all…

When the budget was defeated for the 1962-63 school year, the Jr. High "graduations" were cut. But we also lost 9th grade (jr. high) football for a year. Seriously, it's time to get more teachers involved in all decision-making processes at our schools along with the administrators. Unfortunately, the Board of Education is made up of the same low-information people that vote in our elections …   more ›

The budget crises is a direct result of 4 percent raises for teachers..... across the board. Let us stop the pay raises for at least next 10 years for all except the ones who can demonstrate exceptional measurable results since Teaneck teachers make a lot more than their peers. I am sure most of the residents are not getting any raises. It is really absurd if we continue to give these raises out.   more ›

School Solar Update Planned This Week

Progress report set for Wednesday’s school board meeting.

The Teaneck school district’s architect will offer an update Wednesday on the progress of a project to install ground-mounted solar panel canopies at district buildings. A Board of Education architect working on the project estimated the district would save $1 million over 15 years in energy costs. School officials broke ground on the project in June. The school board has approved installing the panels at six of eight district building. Work was initially expected to be completed in September, according to a June press release. “Through a Power Purchase Agreement with Hudson Energy there will be no cost to taxpayers for this project,” the release said. The update on the work will be given at the 8 p.m. school board public meeting at …

My main comment dealt with the METHODS we use to teach mathematics in this Country. See the video by Conrad Wolfram - I stand by that contention as well as the fact that we keep falling in international rankings. Shalom Academy Money Could Go To Teaneck Classrooms

School officials seek meeting with state education chief.

School media center upgrades, new social studies textbooks and curriculum initiatives are some of the district projects that could benefit from the $1.4 million once allocated to cover tuition for students enrolled at the proposed Shalom Academy Charter School.  Still, Teaneck Board of Education President Ardie Walser cautioned the funds should not be viewed as extra money, as the district already made cuts to meet Shalom Academy’s requirements. “These are just a few ways in which we can use these funds,” Walser said of the possible initiatives. “Please note that the $1.4 million are not additional funds but rather funds that were pulled from programs that were part of the original 2012 - 2013 Teaneck school budget.” State officials denied…

Gov Christie did not "take" anything. He required that the District spend down the reserves (not completely, but to a lower level) rather tax the taxpayers for the $2M. FYI - McGreevey did something pretty similar in 2004. Again looking at the comparative spending guide Total Spending Actual 08-09: 89,947,855 Actual 09-10: 95,358,833 Revised Budget 10-11 88,832,071 Makes it a little hard to view …   more ›
