Ex-trustee seeks return to town school board
Three incumbents and one former Board of Education member will compete for three seats on the Teaneck school board in November, according to the Bergen County Clerk’s Office. Board Trustees Sebastian Rodriguez, Margot Embree Fisher and Shelley Worrell are running, the clerk’s office reported. Ex-board member David Diuguid, who lost his reelection bid last November, is also seeking a board seat. Worrell was elected to fill the unexpired term of Henry Pruitt, who stepped down after winning a spot on the town council. Teaneck was one of more than 400 districts to move its school board election in line with the November general election, according to the New Jersey School Boards Association. District moves ahead with cuts to courtesy busing
The school board has opted not to outsource some instructional paraprofessionals, lunchroom aides and substitute teachers, but left open the possibility of using outside staffers as district jobs become available. An initial $91.9 million budget introduced earlier this month called for outsourcing 46 lunch aides, 27 instructional aides and substitute teachers in a move to save $800,000. The $92.7 million budget approved Wednesday night saved the district positions after school board members heard widespread opposition from employees and parents, many of children in the special education program. Most members wanted to avoid outsourcing, but were faced with a tough financial reality, said Board of Education President Ardie Walser. The …

Teaneck Board of Education trustees are not all sold on a plan to outsource some district paraprofessionals, lunchroom aides and substitute teachers, the Record reported Monday. Board of Education Vice President Gervonn Rice cited her positive experience with district paraprofessionals and Englewood's experience with outsourcing scores of secretaries and professional assistants. "I personally would not like us to venture down that road," Rice told the newspaper. The impact on Teaneck's minority residents, some of whom work in the jobs slated to be cut, was also a concern, the report said. BOE Trustee Howard Rose said the board would take into account concerns raised by parents and staffers at a packed budget meeting last week. Rose …

Teaneck's school board is considering outsourcing all 46 district lunchroom aides, 27 of 68 instructional aides and an unknown number of substitutes, Patch reported Tuesday. The school board sent the $91.9 million spending plan to the county, but officials have stressed the budget can be modified before being adopted. The proposal had drawn strong opposition from parents who spoke at a Board of Education meeting Monday night. They worry the outsourced instructional paraprofessionals won't be as dedicated to students as district employees have been. School officials, however, have pointed to a decline in state funding and say any outsourced workers will be carefully vetted and managed. The proposed outsourcing would save $800,000 in all…
