Two Challengers, Mayor Win Teaneck Township Council Seats

Voters deny re-election bids of two council members.

Note: This report has been updated with new numbers provided by the Township Clerk Wednesday morning. The updated numbers now include vote-by-mail ballots.  Teaneck’s mayor, a town ambulance service volunteer and a school board member won seats on the Township Council Tuesday night. Mohammed Hameeduddin, Bergen County’s first Muslim mayor, was re-elected by a wide margin, netting 4,501 votes, according to unofficial totals released by the town clerk. Mark Schwartz, a council newcomer and Planning Board member, won his first four-year term with 3,254 votes. Candidates Offer Ideas to Spur Economic Development in Teaneck

With days left before the municipal election, the six council hopefuls detailed some of their ideas to boost Teaneck’s business climate and handle development at a candidate forum this week. Incumbents Monica Honis, Mohammed Hameeduddin and Barbara Toffler, along with council election newcomers Alexander Rashin, Mark Schwartz and Henry Pruitt, have recently faced questions on how they would spur economic development in a town where residents have voiced concerns about the tax burden and shuttered storefronts. At the Teaneck Community Charter School’s forum Tuesday, Schwartz pointed to the need for increased foot traffic. i like Mark Schwartzs ideas on this topic the best. I think he is the most qualifed and seems to have more detailed/thought out suggestions. Everything else seems liek what Rashin said "peanuts" Interesting debate.   more ›
