THS athlete has host of accolades
Joel Hernandez, of Teaneck High School's Highwaymen, has committed to playing at Long Island University-Brooklyn, according to NJ.com. Hernandez opted for LIU over Hofstra, Quinnipiac, Robert Morris and St. Joseph's, the report said. He has racked up a host of athletic accolades during his Teaneck basketball career, including being named North Jersey Player of the Year and the Second Team All-State by the Star-Ledger, the website reported. "He averaged 24.1 points and nearly 12 rebounds per game as he helped lead Teaneck to a third-straight Bergen County Jamboree title and third-straight NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 title," the report noted. The following announcement was submitted by Teaneck Project Graduation: The mission of Teaneck Project Graduation is to provide a safe, substance-free celebration for our Teaneck High School seniors on the night of their high school graduation. For the past 21 years, we have accomplished our goal through the efforts of parents who organize and chaperone this event. We want every graduating senior to be able to participate in Project Graduation regardless of income. Since there is no federal, state or school funding for this event, the Project Graduation Committee, which is comprised of volunteer parents, must organize various fundraising activities and solicit donations from parents, local merchants, the community and other school …

Township to seek feedback from local young people

Teaneck's Youth Advisory Board will hold its annual youth forum to collect feedback from local young people on ways to improve the township. "Each year we hold a Youth Forum, where we talk to the Township’s youth and get their comments and suggestions regarding ways to improve the Township for them," a township news release said. "In this year’s Forum, we plan to discuss local schools, safety, recreation, and events, as well as, any issues attendees bring up." Tia Norfleet encourages Teaneck High School students to follow their passions and do what they love.
Tia Norfleet, the first and only African-American female licensed NASCAR driver, was the keynote speaker at Teaneck High School’s Honor Roll Assembly, Thursday. Norfleet addressed approximately 500 Honor Roll students in an assembly to celebrate their academic achievements. Norfleet, the 25-year old daughter of racing veteran Bobby Norfleet, made her NASCAR racing debut in August. Norfleet's career in racing began with go-karts and progressed to drag racing until she finally proved herself by obtaining her NASCAR license, breaking ground by being the first African-American woman to do so. The following is a letter to the editor by Kamakshi Ranjan, a Teaneck High School student: It is now about two years since a bill to address teen dating violence was signed into law in New Jersey. This has resulted in many initiatives across New Jersey schools. Dating violence is now included in the school curriculum and schools have now begun to address the warning signs of dating abuse, reporting procedures and available resources for students. The NJ Department of Education’s Task Force on Dating Violence has developed a model policy and guidelines for Incidents involving dating violence for schools to use (available at http://www.nj.gov/education/aps/cccs/chpe/dating/policy.pdf). Online dance craze performed on the steps of Teaneck High School
The "Harlem Shake," a new online dance craze sweeping across the Internet, has reached the steps of Teaneck High School. A group of unidentified dancers performed their version of the fad outside the school in a YouTube video uploaded Feb. 24. Click above to watch the brief clip. Senior swingman Joel Hernandez banked 31 points in the Highwayman's County victory over Mahwah this weekend
Defending Bergen County Jamboree champion Teaneck muscled their way into the quarterfinals as senior swingman Joel Hernandez scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Highwaymen in an 82-52 victory over Mahwah. Hernandez, who is being heavily recruited by D-1 schools like Hofstra, St. Joseph’s, Robert Morris, Quinnipiac and LIU, provided Teaneck with an early lead by attacking the basket from 20-feet out. The 6-foot-3 senior connected on six treys in the first three quarters. Half of his three-pointers came in the third period alone as part of his 18 point run including turning a transition put-back into a three-point play for a 70-37 lead heading into the final quarter.
