District moves ahead with cuts to courtesy busing
The school board has opted not to outsource some instructional paraprofessionals, lunchroom aides and substitute teachers, but left open the possibility of using outside staffers as district jobs become available. An initial $91.9 million budget introduced earlier this month called for outsourcing 46 lunch aides, 27 instructional aides and substitute teachers in a move to save $800,000. The $92.7 million budget approved Wednesday night saved the district positions after school board members heard widespread opposition from employees and parents, many of children in the special education program. Educators from Teaneck and Englewood will speak at a panel discussion on dual language learning, hosted by Resource, Education, and Awareness by Latinos. The panel will explore the educational advantages to speaking multiple languages and discuss what Teaneck schools are doing to promote language education. The event is scheduled for March 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Bryant School. More information is available on the school district's website.

Event planned at World of Wings
The following announcement was submitted by Henry Pruitt, a Teaneck councilman and former Board of Education trustee: The Voorhees Street Association will be honoring Barbara Pinsak, Teaneck’s Superintendent of Schools, at a Spring Fling on Saturday April 13, 2013 at the World of Wings. She has done a great job in improving the education of students since she took over the job about three years ago. The high school last year sent more than 90% of its students to college. Two thirds went to four year schools and one third went to two year colleges. There was a significant improvement in the four year college rate over the year before. Teaneck faces a bill of more than $100,000 from the state, data shows
State required debt payments facing Teaneck's school district have more than doubled as state aid missed district projections, and the school board mulls outsourcing and cuts to busing. Teaneck was slated to receive $5,185,395 in state aid, an increase of $99,845 over last year, the education department announced in February. At the same time, debt assessments paid to the state Schools Development Authority is set to increase by $80,360 to $128,662 next year, a report by NJSpotlight.com showed. Teaneck is not alone in seeing a significant increase in debt payments, NJSpotlight.com found. District would save $800,000 through proposed outsourcing, according to revised budget.
Teaneck’s school board is mulling a revised spending plan that includes outsourcing lunchroom and some classroom aides, axing two administrative positions and cuts to courtesy busing. Under the $91.9 million proposed school budget detailed Monday night, the district aims to save $800,000 by outsourcing 27 of the 68 instructional paraprofessionals mostly with less than three years of experience, all 46 district lunchroom aides and an untold amount of substitute teachers, according to Business Administrator Robert Finger. Eliminating the two administrative positions would save $205,000, either through retirements or other cuts, Finger said. Tia Norfleet encourages Teaneck High School students to follow their passions and do what they love.
Tia Norfleet, the first and only African-American female licensed NASCAR driver, was the keynote speaker at Teaneck High School’s Honor Roll Assembly, Thursday. Norfleet addressed approximately 500 Honor Roll students in an assembly to celebrate their academic achievements. Norfleet, the 25-year old daughter of racing veteran Bobby Norfleet, made her NASCAR racing debut in August. Norfleet's career in racing began with go-karts and progressed to drag racing until she finally proved herself by obtaining her NASCAR license, breaking ground by being the first African-American woman to do so. Norfleet explained to the students that NASCAR requires a special license that must be signed off by professionals attesting to your abilities. "Even if …

The Teaneck Board of Education will host a screening of "Sing Your Song," a critically acclaimed documentary about the life and activism of Harry Belafonte. The screening will be held at the Benjamin Franklin Middle School auditorium (1315 Taft Road) Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. A soul food tasting and panel discussion will follow the film. With a town that is trying to promote cleaner greener living, why are they cutting bus stops and cutting courtesy busing. Busing children is safer and cleaner. With fewer bus stops and courtesy busing minimized, more parents will be driving to school and/or bus stops creating additional congestion, pollution and safety issues.
