Approaching winter storm prompts cancelations

Teaneck's public school district will operate on a half-day schedule Friday because of a forecasted winter storm, the district announced. Saturday Academy classes are canceled for Feb. 9 and there will be no afternoon pre-k, according to the district. The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning starting 6 a.m. Friday for eastern Bergen County. The following message is from Teaneck Public Schools Superintendent Barbara Pinsak: Dear Teaneck Parents and Guardians: Throughout the weekend, I have spoken to a number of parents about the tragedy in Newtown Connecticut and the topic of safety in our schools. The intent of this letter is to discuss the safety and also to provide you with information concerning supports for our students who might exhibit anxiety as a result of both the incident and the ensuing media coverage. The following was provided by the Teaneck Public School District: Superintendent of Teaneck Schools Barbara Pinsak, with members of the Teaneck Board of Education at a recent board meeting formally thanked Teaneck residents Lynda and Nina Ores for their gift to the Teaneck Schools. The Ores family generously donated over 400 Holocaust-related volumes from the collection of their husband and father, the late Dr. Richard Ores, a Holocaust survivor who was liberated from Dachau in 1945. His collection is valued at over $5000. It will be prominently displayed along with a previously donated collection of Holocaust books in the Library Media Center on the second floor of Teaneck High School. An online contest could bring up to $50,000 in grand funding to Teaneck’s Benjamin Franklin Middle School. The school is seeking votes now through Dec. 19 to win funding through the Clorox Company’s Power A Bright Future grant program. Anyone 13 and up and cast votes online once a day at the Clorox website or by text message. “The program that receives the highest number of votes will be awarded the $50,000 grand-prize grant, and the next top vote-getters in the Play, Create and Explore categories respectively will each be awarded a $25,000 grant. Just a day after classes resumed, Teaneck Public Schools will operate on a delayed opening Thursday morning. A blast of wintery weather Wednesday led to the district-wide late opening, according to the school district website. Click for detailed information on school opening times. Teaneck schools were closed for a week when Hurricane Sandy slammed the region, downing trees and knocking out power to thousands across town. Although normally closed Thursday and Friday for teachers convention, the district announced classes would be in session after the annual event was cancelled because of Sandy. Teaneck Public Schools will reopen Wednesday and hold classes during days normally off for teachers convention, the district announced Sunday. Administrators and some staffers will work at Teaneck High School Monday, according to the school district. Schools were already set to be closed Tuesday for election day. The New Jersey Education Association opted to cancel its annual convention in Atlantic City set for Nov. 8 - 9 because of Sandy. Gov. Police across Bergen County are investigating a string of reported child luring attempts.
Teaneck’s schools superintendent has issued a safety reminder to parents as police investigate a growing list of reported child luring attempts across Bergen County. “Recently, the news has included a number of local incidents of attempted child abductions. This is a timely reminder to all of us to teach our children what to do if a stranger or known adult attempts to make contact with them,” Superintendent Barbara Pinsak wrote in a letter to parents. The tips, shared by the school district from the National Crime Prevention Council, are found in the attached letter and on the district website. The Teaneck school district’s architect will offer an update Wednesday on the progress of a project to install ground-mounted solar panel canopies at district buildings. A Board of Education architect working on the project estimated the district would save $1 million over 15 years in energy costs. School officials broke ground on the project in June. The school board has approved installing the panels at six of eight district building. Work was initially expected to be completed in September, according to a June press release. “Through a Power Purchase Agreement with Hudson Energy there will be no cost to taxpayers for this project,” the release said. State Education Commissioner Chris Cerf joined Teaneck school leaders and New Jersey officials Monday at Thomas Jefferson Middle School for the kickoff of the state’s second annual “Week of Respect” to stand up against bullying. Teaneck resident Steven Goldstein, Garden State Equality Chair, led a group of students and officials in a game show “quiz” to help educate young people about ways to spot, prevent and handle bullying incidents.
