Council approves ordinance 4-0.
An ordinance passed Tuesday grants Teaneck residents priority over other candidates who apply for jobs as township police officers and firefighters. Although Teaneck already had a policy of giving preference to residents, the town code did not specifically include police hires. Under the ordinance, eligible county residents would be ranked second, followed by state residents and other candidates. The state Civil Service Commission, which handles testing for applicants, would first exhaust its list of qualified residents before moving on to other candidates, according to the ordinance. Residency is defined as an applicant who lives in town from the date they apply to when they are hired. “This is the maximum that we could do to give …

Judge rules complaint against Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, a Democratic candidate for Congress, can move forward.
A judge has found probable cause to move ahead with a complaint by a longtime political foe of Teaneck’s deputy mayor, in which she accuses the now-Congressional candidate of leaking confidential information about her to the media. Former Councilwoman Barbara Toffler alleges that Adam Gussen, who is running against Republican Rep. Scott Garret in the 5th District, leaked a personnel complaint filed against her by Township Manager William Broughton, and that he shared with a newspaper reporter information about a closed session council meeting in Jan. 2011. "I have evidence which provides probable cause to believe that this confidential information, and in all likelihood the letter itself, was provided ... by Deputy Mayor and Councilman …

Two ongoing Teaneck council members were honored for their years of service this week, days before new members will be sworn in at a reorganization meeting. Deputy Mayor says councilwoman’s allegations follow series of false claims.
Councilwoman Barbara Toffler this week called for a council colleague to resign and said she would seek to have criminal charges brought against the longtime political adversary amid a swirl of allegations following Teaneck’s municipal election. In a statement read at Tuesday’s council meeting, Toffler said a voicemail she received from a Teaneck Suburbanite reporter “contemporaneously” identified the person responsible for leaking confidential information about a personnel compliant filed against her last year, who she later said was Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen. “The voicemail comes in at 5:42 on January 31, 2011 and describes a discussion Deputy Mayor Gussen is having with the Record reporter,” Toffler said in the statement. In 1962, President Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and the calendar week in which that day falls (May 13 to 19 this year) as National Police Week. Just eighteen months ago, the Township of Teaneck was particularly saddened by the loss of Officer John Abraham Jr. and on Tuesday, May 15, flags across the country will be flown at half-staff in memory of all the law enforcement officers that have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Please take a moment to reflect on the sacrifice the men and women like Officer Abraham have made, remember the friends and family they have left behind, and also recognize the ongoing service of our current public safety personnel who protect and safeguard our rights and …
