Car ended up in marshy area off I-95, state police say.
A woman from Fort Lee and her 4-year-old son escaped injury after the car she was driving careened off an I-95 ramp in Teaneck, leaving it partially submerged in a marshy area, state police said. The 65-year-old woman's Subaru Forester crashed through a fence and landed in Overpeck Creek off the highway's northbound lanes around 5 p.m., according to State Police Sgt. Adam Grossman. Two Leonia police officers, Frank Rocco and Michael Jennings, went into the water and brought the mother and child to safety, police reported. Township firefighters used high pressure fan to ventilate the smoke, fire chief says.
A small kitchen fire broke out in an apartment at a senior citizen housing complex in Teaneck Wednesday morning, officials said. Firefighters were called at 8:42 a.m. for a report of a fire in a third floor apartment at the Five Star Residences on Pomander Walk and arrived two minutes later, according to Fire Chief Anthony Verley. Staff had extinguished the flames, but fire crews found heavy smoke on the floor. Verley said a burner on the stove had been turned on under a plastic bowl, creating thick toxic smoke. Crews made sure the flames hadn't spread elsewhere in the apartment or the units above and helped residents to safety in the lobby. This year the festivities had a 70's theme, with members of the all-volunteer ambulance service turning out in their best 70's costumes, from disco stars to hippies. Neighbor aids mother and young children after fire that injured five people.
Five people were hospitalized and two families forced from their homes after flames ripped through a house at the corner of Ester Avenue and Beverly Road early Saturday, according to witnesses and officials. Rosario Paita was asleep on the first floor of the two-family home and woke up to find thick smoke pouring from the upstairs apartment. She quickly gathered her young children and escaped around 5:30 a.m. "It was a lot of fire," she said, adding flames were shooting from the windows. Man revived from "clinical death"
A man in his sixties went into cardiac arrest, but was revived by two bystanders at a Queen Anne Road synagogue Saturday, officials said. Rescuers from the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Teaneck Fire Department rushed to the congregation to find trained bystanders had used a portable automatic defibrillator and CPR to bring the man back from "clinical death," a medical term referring to the halt of blood circulation and breathing, according to TVAC's Larry Robertson. Firefighters and EMTs took over, bringing the man to Holy Name Medical Center, Robertson said. The patient was talking by the time he reached the emergency room. The Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps will host its third annual fundraising gala March 9. This year's theme is "Saturday Night Fever," featuring a 70's theme, food, entertainment, theme photographs and prizes, according to a news release. The event is planned at the Teaneck Jewish Center, starting at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $50 per person or $350 for a table of 10. Eighteen-year-old Jennifer Chan, a Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps member, has been named a finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search for her study of a breast cancer drug, northjersey.com reported. Chan, a Bergen County Academies senior from Upper Saddle River, was one of 40 finalists selected from more than 1,700 applications. Her project focused on Tamoxifen and the ways the drug works in a cell, among other areas, the report said. She will present her research in Washington D.C. before throngs of experts. Woman fell about 20 feet from the highway, officials say.
Teaneck emergency responders rescued a 42-year-old woman who tumbled down an embankment while she walked along Route 4 early Saturday, officials said. The woman reportedly ran out of gas and called a friend for help, police said. The two walked to get gas at a station nearby in Hackensack, but when the friend got back he noticed the woman was no longer with him. He found her yelling for help near the Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball field, according to police. TVAC members praised for efforts in serious crash, treatment of patients in cardiac arrest and leadership.
The Township Council recently honored members of the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps, including recognition for their role in a lengthy rescue following a highway crash. Ambulance Corps President Angelae Wilkerson was presented with the Life Membership Award for her 10 years of service. Wilkerson has served in positions from driver to crew chief and treasurer. "Some people come down for their shift every week and then they leave at the end of their shift and we don't see them until the next shift," said TVAC Capt. Kevie Feit.
