Merchants to compete for $50,000 investment
Teaneck's Pickle Licious is one of three New Jersey businesses scheduled to appear Tuesday on a new CNBC reality show. The three merchants will compete for votes from a 100-person studio audience to win $50,000 on the debut of "Crowd Rules," according to CNBC. The businesses will make their pitch to judges jewelry designer Kendra Scott, NY1 Anchor Pat Kiernan and a weekly guest judge. Pickle Licious will face off against Keyport's Mr. Green Tea and Heartbreaking Dawns in Wyckoff. This week, San Antonio-based Bird Bakery founder Elizabeth Chambers will join the judges. New restaurant to offer late night eats on Cedar Lane
A new Cedar Lane restaurant launched by a former waiter at Louie's Charcoal Pit is scheduled to open Sunday morning. Al's Charcoal Pit, a diner-style eatery at the former Mabat Steakhouse location, will open at 7 a.m., according to ex-Louie's staffer K. M. S. Alom, known to most customers as Al. The restaurant will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to midnight, with a 24-hour schedule planned, he told Patch Saturday. The menu include everything from breakfasts, burgers and steaks to soups and Greek-fare, he told Patch in a March interview. Two men were found fatally shot in Teaneck three years ago
A Queens nightclub owner was sentenced Friday to 13 years in prison for a drug conspiracy that left two men shot to death on a street in Teaneck three years ago, NorthJersey.com reported. Nicholas Kiriakakis, 29, must serve 6 1/2 years of the sentence before being eligible for parole. Superior Court Judge Liliana De-Avila Silebi sentenced Kiriakakis to eight years for a conspiracy charge and another five years on a hindering apprehension charge. Prosecutors had charged with Kiriakakis with the February 2010 murder of Michael Mirasola, 27 and Jonathan Beneduce, 28, both of Queens. Deputy mayor says Teaneck should explore using volunteer firefighters.
The Teaneck Township Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to approve the town's $69.1 million budget amid repeated calls from residents to make spending cuts. The budget was mostly unchanged from when it was introduced in March. The 2013 spending plan includes a $53.4 million tax levy. A homeowner assessed at the town's $452,622 average is set to pay $3,949 in taxes. The library tax, separate from the municipal figure, went up $171.09. A $2.2 million chunk of the budget first allocated to covering a flood of successful property tax appeals was removed after the state's Local Finance Board granted Teaneck permission to issue refunding bonds over three years. The Teaneck Police Department's Community Policing Squad will host a seminar on preparing for emergencies Thursday night. The public event is planned for May 9 at 7 p.m. at police headquarters. "This will be the second offering of the seminar which will include various topics such as emergency communications and utility emergencies," a police department announcement said. "In attendance will be representatives of the Teaneck Police Department, the Teaneck Fire Department and the Teaneck Office of Emergency Management." Security camera footage and partial license plate led to man's arrest, city police say.
Security camera footage and an observant 7-Eleven clerk led Englewood police to charge a Teaneck man with pulling a knife on the convenience store worker last month, authorities said Wednesday night. Gregory Stewart, 36, menaced the clerk at Englewood's Tenafly Road 7-Eleven with a knife early April 21 in an argument over the price of cigarettes, police said. Englewood Detective Adolfo Gutierrez identified Stewart as the attacker using the store's security camera footage and a partial license plate number spotted by the clerk, according to Detective Capt. The Teaneck Township Council reversed course and voted Tuesday to extend an invitation to an Iraq War veteran who was disinvited last month from speaking at the town’s Memorial Day ceremony after criticizing the governing body. The 5-0 vote came following a packed public meeting where a string of residents and veterans lambasted the council for the decision to rescind the speaking invite first issued by the town’s Patriotic Observance Advisory Board to Jason Castle, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Teaneck resident.
