Week Ahead: Centuries-Old Teaneck Tree, Volunteer Recognition

Here's a brief look at some events and news to watch for this week in Teaneck: - County officials plan to remove a historic old oak tree that has stood over Cedar Lane and Palisade Avenue for at least 250 years, Patch reported on Friday. In an inspection report, a certified tree expert said the tree was decaying and should be chopped down for safety reasons.  The Puffin Foundation, which donated money to protect the tree, has hired its own expert. Still, a county official told Patch the tree would be removed by Memorial Day. The state Local Finance Board has approved Teaneck's application to issue refunding bonds to cover $2.2 million in tax appeals, Township Manager William Broughton said Wednesday.  Three alleged thieves linked to Bergen County's "James Bond Gang" were indicted this week in Sussex County on charges stemming from a burglary in Sparta, the New Jersey Herald reported Thursday.  Leevan Lawrence, 31, of Englewood, Courry Rice, 30, of Hackensack, and the crew's purported ringleader, 32-year-old Jerry Montgomery of Teaneck, were charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree theft, third-degree conspiracy to commit burglary and theft, and fourth-degree criminal mischief, according to the report.  A plan to build a Holocaust memorial and education…

A former waiter at Louie's Charcoal Pit, which closed last year, is set to open a new restaurant next month not far from the longtime Teaneck landmark.  The new diner-style eatery, called Al's Charcoal Pit, will open at what was Mabat Steakhouse at Cedar Lane and Elm Avenue, and be run by the popular Louie's staffer K. M. S. Alom, known to most customers as Al.  The Township Council’s introduced $70.6 million budget has drawn criticism from some residents over the town’s handling of $2.2 million in tax rebates and prompted a push for spending cuts. The school board has opted not to outsource some instructional paraprofessionals, lunchroom aides and substitute teachers, but left open the possibility of using outside staffers as district …

Teaneck's zoning board on Thursday will continue hearing testimony in a developer's plan to build a Walgreens store in place of three Cedar Lane properties.  Win Development LLC has submitted plans to build the Walgreens at the former Louie's Charcoal Pit, the vacant Davis Toys and corner gas station Larry's Friendly Service. The plans call for the existing buildings to be torn down to make way for the 10,000 square foot pharmacy and a 26 space parking lot. The developer appeared before a zoning board meeting last month, but the presentations were continued.  Some residents and Cedar Lane merchants have criticized the plan, saying the proposed Walgreens is entering a crowded market and would not fit in with other stores in the area.
