On the article High School SAT Scores Across Bergen County [Interactive Map]

ReplyIt appears that income data is based upon zip code.. all families in a community while SAT score data is from the public high school within that municipality. It would be interesting to see breakdowns of SAT scores for ALL students in a zip code, those in the public schools and those in private/religious/parochial educational institutions. It is a proven fact that SAT scores are correlated to family education and net worth/income. Wealthier families tend to have two incomes from two parents or guardians and can afford tutors, supplemental remedial and advanced student support and more cultural and learning experiences including travel, theater, museums and in home books, computers and news source publication subscriptions.

On the article Teaneck Explores Repairing P.A.L. Building

ReplyI have concerns about this building's potential and value. Parking in the area is limitted and restricted. The proximity to a highway where vehicles travel at 55 MPH is a safety issue. The ingress and egress to Route #4 at Belle Avenue creates a potentially dangerous situation for vehicles in the area; cyclists and pedestrians as well. The building has no basement, heat, air conditioning nor decent insulation and is structurally questionable.. the overall footprint and amount of internal square footage is small and the cost/return on investment ratio would be low from my perspective. Don't waste the dollars; put them towards the old police building which can provide plenty of meeting space.

ReplyAleibo... don't blame the town. This is an example of a family making a personal decision based upon economics and the reality of Teaneck, Bergen County and the country going through a metamorphis of commerce. I will remember the selection, service and wonderful hardware store smell of Ludewig's. Good luck to the Fradkin family and thanks for decades of service.

On the article Teaneck’s Lone Movie Theater Closes

ReplyVery valid points, Barbara. I have my fist movie going expeerience memories dating back to this theater in the 1950's. Remember seeing Davie Crocket there. Admission was fifty cents, popcorn was fifteen cents, a cup of soda was a dime. I won a Frisbee (my first) there in 1956 in between two Saturday afternoon movies; they pulled numbered tickets out of a box to match the stub the patrons kept. I guess this movie relic has finally gone the way of Hackensack's Oritani & Fox, (where we first saw 007/Goldfinger!).
Today's newer much more comfortable theaters have modern HVAC systems, digital multi directional sound, IMAX and 3-D capability, stadium seating with higher chair backs, modern restrooms and provide full handicap accessibility. Most are in mall type environments with extensive free parking and many now offer meals during the show...not my idea of fun entertainment or luxurious dining. This closure is just another piece of local economic change creating new downtown landscapes in America's suburbia. Not sure if can be termed progress though.
Doubtful the return on investment can sustain a "classic movies" operation; most of them can be borrowed from BCCLS libraries and viewed on flat panel HD TV in the comfort of home. -

Jim has hit the fiscal/economic nail on the head. Close to half of Teaneck's high school age students attend THS; the other half, (approx.) attend private and parochial/religious secondary schools. While the overall mean average Teaneck income is relatively high, the average income disparity between families with children in our public high school is much less than the average income of those in non-public high schools. While many, if not most towns have a typical histogram distribution of income, with a large center, and reduced size ends, Teaneck appears to have a small mid level income average (center of histogram) with large numbers on the left and right sides of the histogram.
