ReplyI would give anything to a have a place like the one in Maywood -- it's such a wonderful place, even if some of the prices are not as competitive as I would like. An international food market with an array of delicacies and staples would be a shot in the arm for Teaneck. Why can't we get something like that here? Why not? In fact, that's precisely what we need. How cool would that be? I would spend beaucoup dollars there, I absolutely would.

ReplyI still hope that Walgreen will not take over those empty spaces, not with CVS right on the next block and independent pharmacies within a hop-skip-jump. This just defies common sense. It will further homogenize and "borify" our business district. I won't shop there - it's not even that I dislike Walgreen; there just won't really be a need for me to use them. On the other hand, I am heartened by the knowledge that a cafe/art space named after Phoebe Snow is going to open. A new jewelry store has or is opening. There are, in fact, some interesting businesses still on Cedar Lane. But still, too many empty storefronts too. I would welcome a Panera Bread, even a Starbucks. I would love a cute new restaurant or diner, or a market of some kind. Anything but a 1.chain drug store; 2. nail/hair salon; 3. bank. And we probably also don't need any more dry cleaners either.

ReplyDon't we have two CVS' on Cedar Lane? We have other pharmacies too, independent ones. We have a CVS on Queen Anne Road. We have a Walgreens on Teaneck Rd, correct? We have a Rite Aid too, I think, on Queen Anne. Again, diversity. We need retail diversity. We need a vibrant mix of bizzes on Cedar Lane. I'm sick and tired of chain drug stores. We don't need any more nail salons. Lord knows, we don't need any more banks! We need a place to buy groceries at a reasonable price. An artisan crafts/gifts store would be lovely. A clothing store. A diner/coffee shop. A restaurant of any kind. There are so many things that could go into these empty spaces that could add vibrancy to the district. I'm just so disappointed with how Teaneck leadership deals with these issues. Cedar Lane is being divested of its character. It's going to become a dull place -- it's already well on its way. I don't even want to get into what's going to happen to the theater. I will say that one bright spot is the opening of the art space dedicated to Phoebe Snow. I hope the town will support this Blast Cafe replacement...

ReplyPlease forgive my bluntness, but honestly: this is absolutely preposterous. How many chain pharmacies does Cedar Lane, or Teaneck for that matter, really need? We need a variety of businesses to restore interest and verve to this district. Have you gone to the CVS on Cedar Lane at the intersection of Queen Anne Road? It's almost empty. One wonders if Walgreens has done its due diligence to determine if they will generate the business volume to support the investment. It would be wonderful if another diner could open where Louie's used to be, or a grocery store, a gift store (I miss Eco Galleria!) -- something, anything other than yet another unnecessary, sterile pharmacy Can we say "bo-riiiinnnng"?

ReplyI miscounted ... three CVS and a Walgreens, correct? Isn't there also a Rite Aid on Queen Anne Road? Regardless, we certainly don't need another chain pharmacy. If Walgreens were to open where Louie's used to be, isn't the CVS right on the next block? I agree that we have to consider parking issues, of course. And I'd love to open a business if I had something I wished to sell (smile). One needs a true can-do, entrepreneurial spirit to attempt such a thing in these still-tough times...not to mention the support of the community, including its leaders. I patronize the businesses in my community but I do comparison shop for value. We need another decent supermarket offering value and variety ... it's too bad Acme's closed years ago...

ReplyIt would be nice if the persons who worked for the town lived in town, sure, but I don't think it's a critical need. We do need a variety of small businesses to make the town interesting and a destination for shopping and browsing ... at least among its residents. If we're going to have to court national retailers, then mix it up there too. We have two CVS' and a Walgreens already in Teaneck. Why another Walgreens? Won't they eat into each other's profits? How many bottles of aspirin do we need (smile)? Bring in Starbucks or another franchise -- something the town doesn't have. I hope the movie theater doesn't stay fallow long. What a waste of space and how sad that it went under. I wish that space could be cultivated, if not for another movie theater, then some sort of arts community hub. I see poor Cedar Lane turning into a ghost town.

ReplyWhy has the Council been so intransigently bureaucratic why it comes to small businesses? Or is it just my perception, perhaps an unfair one, forged by a few complaints I've heard over the years from small biz owners? I can understand the need for rules and regs, but making the lives difficult for small biz owners who want to serve the community and make a living at the same time is counter-productive and frustrating. I really hope Louie's is not taken over by Walgreens. It's not needed on Cedar Lane -- not with two CVS'! I'd so love it if another diner or coffee shop would open there. It's set up for a restaurant -- let's get another one in there!

ReplyTeaneck should have its own "Small Business" celebrations that way Amex and Optimum do on a national scale. And you know, I'd be fine with a national chain to help "anchor" the district, but another pharmacy? Really? We don't have enough of these cluttering our town? Won't they cannibalize business from each other, not to mention further contribute to the commercial homogenization of our town? Believe it or not, I'd be fine with a Starbucks as long as it doesn't take away biz from Bischoff's etc. Or how about an independent pharmacy? I've never understood why Teaneck seems to set up barriers to entrepreneurial progress and prowess. In this economy, they should be banging on doors to get folks to open their businesses here. And we need a vital, vibrant mix of them, not the same old, same old cookie cutter stuff. No more banks, no more chain pharmacies and please, we don't need another nail salon.

ReplyArt, I love your idea. We need to spruce up Cedar Lane to make it a true community "hub." It can be modern, of course, but with an "old-time" feel to encourage strolling, walking, browsing and of course shopping. I know that this district was recently "improved" but there's still something sterile-looking about it. And the other biz districts, especially the one near Votee park, can also use a modest "face-lift." That particular district is hideous looking. First and foremost, though, Teaneck leaders need to minimize the bureaucracy besetting would-be retailers and figure out a way to put out the welcome mat so entrepreneurial, small-biz retailers will want to set up shop here.

The town should try and do whatever it can possibly do to save this business. I don't know what it can do, but I'm speaking out of desperation. We love this store. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Teaneck leadership did some sort of event or initiative to build up, merchandise, publicize, etc. local businesses to draw more customers? (I do know there's a local Chamber of Commerce.) How many more small businesses can we possibly afford to lose in Teaneck before it becomes void retail wasteland or ghost town? This is really upsetting.
