Transportation Officials to Hold Public Meetings on Route 4 Bridge Work

Presentation tentatively set for May 10 Township Council meeting.

Representatives from the state’s Department of Transportation will brief the public and Township Council on plans to replace the Route 4 Palisade Avenue bridge, a department spokesman said.

According to the DOT, the Route 4 crossing, over Palisade Avenue and Windsor Road, was picked for replacement after being identified by a study of the highway’s bridges.

“The scope of the project is to replace the existing bridge and improvements to the Route 4 roadway within the project limits, including Belle Avenue intersection improvements,” said state DOT spokesman Tim Greeley.

A presentation by the DOT was scheduled for the April 12 council meeting, but Greeley said the visit would be rescheduled after a “misunderstanding.” The briefing has been tentatively scheduled for the

Transportation officials will also schedule a separate community meeting about the work around the same time as the council presentation, Greeley said.

The Palisade Avenue Route 4 crossing was one of 202 "structurally deficient" bridges identified last year in a report by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. The bridge was built in 1931 and carries an average of 108,000 vehicles daily, the report said.
